Warp Drive a step closer to reality?

Good news guys, while these sort of advancements are beyond our lifespan, a crazy russian billionair has started funding an immortality project for 2045! BONUS! http://2045.com/about/

Its all coming together nicely :)

Downloadable conciousness into robotic body + FTL capable spacecraft (and lets be real, SPACE LASERS!) = EvE RealLife!

I know people will dismiss it as a crack-pot dream but things like this and Mars One are exactly what we need! I think the 2045 site sums it up very well:

Mankind has turned into a consumer society standing at the edge of a total loss of the conceptual guidelines necessary for further evolution. The majority of people are almost exclusively absorbed in merely maintaining their own comfortable lives.

Let's not forget, the military are probably already way ahead of the times with this kinda stuff!

Military?

Perhaps official research institutions but most of the work is done by Contractors.

If you travel in a straight line at faster than the speed of light how do you navigate and avoid hitting stars, planets, asteroids, space debris etc?

By not having any mass (well from the universes perspective).

E=mc²

Photons, for example, are supposed to have no mass. By travelling faster than light you would, by that model, weigh less than nothing. If it still works at that point.

Of course, we aren't really sure how photons work.

By not being in this universe.

This is a simplified way of putting what I said. You have no mass from the universes perspective. But to you you should still be perfectly normal. So, relative to the universe, you would not exist.

I'm not sure what would happen during acceleration and retardation, I need to look it up.

If you travel faster than light, how do you slow down as any time spent pressing stop to turn off the drive or to begin to slow down would take an infinite amount of time in the outside perspective and thus cover an infinite distance?

As you approach the speed of light time travels much more slowly outside, at the point where you reach the speed of light you should arrive immediately at your destination, from your own perspective, right?

But realistically you would get ot 0.9999999 or whatever at which point seconds would equal years outside, add some more nines and seconds equal thousands of years etc.. So you would reach the destination way before you reach light speed.. unless the acceleration is instant and thus back to first problem.

Is that right or what?

no, the drive warps space around the ship the ship remains in a section of unwarped space and so never approaches the speed of light (the ship is traveling relatively slowly in it's unwarped space). This is why it can move faster than the speed of light, because it is not moving faster than the speed of light.

Well going by Alcubierre bubble, you basically create a mini (very lax term) universe within the framework of our own universe.

The C doesnt exist there, so it is of no problem to us.

The problem we have now, (if this new information can be proven) is finding "exotic" matter of some sort to be able to do a larger test.

Thank goodness for all those anti-protons we discovered in our atmosphere? i forget, it was a little while ago.

If the article stated the nature of the exotic substance it would be easier to gauge the feasilit :)
