Living in Bristol... Bristolians advise!

I live in Horfield at the moment, and to be honest it's a little too far out of the city centre to be ideal for me. Getting to work and back is easy but any time i want a night out it's a trip on the hobo-bus into town with all the weirdos and then about £12-£15 for a taxi home. Not the end of the world but you notice it when you used to live on Coronation rd and could happily walk to park street in 20 minutes and walk home at the end of a night.

I would recommend Coronation Rd in Southville. It's a major rd so it's not exactly quiet and you wont really find a place with a garage, but most places will have 1 or 2 parking spaces out the front, (instead of a front garden), the houses are old edwardian with really nice high ceilings and solid wood floors, and from there you are in an ideal spot to eaither walk into town, or get in a car and be in the countryside inside 5 minutes.

I work at Aztec west which is on the other side of the city and it was only a 20 minute drive as you would just go around bristol rather than through it.

Finally i know for a fact tht you can get a huge 4 bed rental for £1200 a month there with 4 parking spaces out the front, a small back garden, a whopping great big kitchen and some of the rooms also had en suites. You could be lord of the manor :D

To put the need of a car into perspective, I now live in BS1, work in the centre and have ditched my car. It would be pointless to have it if you have to walk 20 minutes to get it every time.

You would be much better off investing in a decent road bike.

Redland is a nice area and seems to have decent street parking.

As above, I sold my car after a year in Bristol as I couldn't justify it, though I live in Clifton not BS1.

I still use a car every weekend though. I hire from Europcar from Fri-Mon for work which costs £40 per weekend, or there's a City Car Club car about 100m down the road for the odd hourly usage. Otherwise I cycle to work and everywhere else that's local, or taxi it if dressed up or getting drunk.

Wow, sorry I mentioned them!

Where do you live exactly Knip? I live not far from the Elm Tree Pub.

Perrycroft, just down from the shops on the way up to the dual carriageway.

No letter bombs or prank ringing the doorbell now thankyou please. :D

Shall give Redland tonight... As you all seem to speak highly of it. No need to climb the hill if I can taxi it! :D

The reason I'm attached to the car, is I've just got it (only take delivery next week!). Unfortunately this job has come out of the blue and is a huge opportunity.

So yes, I will probably have to kill it when I go to Bristol and that hurts because It's been my planned car for two years. :(

£1200 is the top-end budget, I would much rather spend 1.2k all in each month and save up for the move back to central.

Right... so the job came through and I'm moving to Bristol!

Got 4 viewings for tomorrow:

1 x Denmark Street (BS1)
1 x Baldwin Street (BS1)
1 x Southville Pembroke Road (BS3)
1 x Southville Howard Road (BS3)

I've heard Southville is quite nice? I'm aware these are closer to main city, so I'm guessing further south I may have more trouble...

I would avoid the two BS1 ones, but they're not overly bad, Baldwin st always has horrible traffic though, so is busy pretty much all the time.

The two BS3 ones are in fairly decent enough areas, walking distance to North St for the shops as well.

By the way, they call it Southville to make it sound posh, its technically Bedminster honest :D

Still subscribed to this but out and about at the moment so will get back to you properly late. I work 20 seconds off Baldwin Street and know the others so :)

I'm not too fussed about traffic, I'm used to London and was smack bang on Tottenham Court road for a good while.

Main attraction for BS1 at the present time is 2-3 minutes from work, all of said finds are professional flatshares so should be good fun. One of the Southville's professional ones come with cleaners etc, so that might been something worth factoring in!

If anyone is in the same situation - www.spareroom.co.uk with the premium subscription has been fantastic.

Only thing concerning me tomorrow, is that a deal MUST be closed, I'm due to start work on 21st. I think 4 viewings is ample amount, only 1 of them is interview style, that is with a girl my age, but there are 4-5 people going so if she hates me I won't get it. Positive thing is that the other 3 are simple "I like this" and shove a deposit down.

I shall update and say where I will be living!

Clifton is probably the nicest area. You'll enjoy Bristol. It's like London but a lot more... laidback.

Though I am stuck in Reading, having lived in London for a large part of my life and loving it, Bristol would be my only other choice of place to live. It has everything one could want.

I have a few mates down there and always enjoy my time down there.

What I keep hearing too...

I'm still sceptical coming from a big city, but everyone says "It's like London without the busyness". From my walk around, it's definitely reminiscent of London to some degree, with some nice period properties which I appreciate.

If you still need a car, without designated parking you will struggle in BS1. Expect to pay a lot for it, if you can find it.

There is a multi-story just off Denmark street though.

Leaving the 350z back home - Maybe I'll invest in a bicycle .

Good idea :)

I live in BS1 and don't use my bike at all.

I will warn you for Denmark Street, it's quite loud on a Friday and Saturday. Maybe drop into Shadows whilst you visit!

Thank you for the advice, my plan at the moment is go for somewhere with STL allowed. Once I get my foot in the door, I'll learn the best places to live and move. Going furnished so can fly about as I please!

Key thing at the moment - Don't be homeless when I need to start work :D

Best of luck with moving and the new job!
I'm a student atm, living right by Clifton Down Sainsbury's and love this area! I would've said Clifton as well, but I guess closer to work would be very convenient, but I bike it everywhere so it wouldn't take me long to get to the centre, especially as it's all downhill!

I lived just off Baldwin Street in my first year (Crow Lane) and that area at night has a few regular tramps but Baldwin Street generally isn't too bad. No big supermarket close by though. Living right by Sainsbury's now is brilliant :D

That big Sainsburys is the second most expensive for prices in the country, second only to Kensington in London.

They know they're onto a good thing with all them students! :D

Haha, tramps won't have much luck with a Londoner... :p

Cheers for the good wishes, I am thoroughly excited to get going... should be a very fun year.

My hopes are on the flat with just the girl, as it will be a nice balance of work/life and relaxing. Bit apprehensive about a 5 way share, may be too noisy for me to work from home, but social element may make up for it.

Debatable. It's a right pain in the **** but is slowly getting better with a permit system.

I live in Redland and love it, and am moving to just inside clifton in the summer, both lovely areas.
