Purchased an antique clock for £770 inc courier via ebay from a dealer/trader.

Payment methods on the listing included paypal cheque etc

When seller has invoiced me he has made reference to me sending a cheque and has implied that if paying by paypal then i need to pay paypal fees on top.

None of this is mentioned in the listing. Where do I stand with this?

BTW Paypal is my prefered method as I can pay by credit card and for the next couple of months get 5% cashback with my amex. (this was taken into account with my bid)

Go straight to eBay and ask for their input on the matter. My understanding is that any "fees" incurred are to be dealt with by the Seller.

This... if it was not stated in the listing then it's the sellers problem.

It is irrelevant even if he did. eBay made it quite clear last year that no seller was allowed to penalise a buyer with the fees when using PayPal when they made it mandatory to accept it as a seller.

Tell him to do one and report him to eBay

Seller pays fees unless agreed otherwise hence most including them in the items price or postage i would tell them to do one ebay will stand by you on this im sure

For some payment methods sellers can charge a fee to cover the costs, but not with scampal because ebay stand to lose money if buyers use another payment method, they are so incensed by the idea of someone using another payment method that giving a discount for payment by bank transfer for example will get you an angry (and illegible) email from one of their Indians saying you're trying to penalise buyers for using paypal.

He is trying it on,tell him to give himself a shake and honor the transaction as ebays guidelines outline.he hasn't got a leg to stand on and he can't do a thing because he has entered a contractual agreement with you for the sale of the goods, any post demands are empty and pointless.

It's a universal pay system, there are bound to be hick-ups but it's pretty secure, does a fair bit to Protect the buyer and seller respectively and I like many others have had nothing but good experience with the system. Sure they have some charges but a company has to generate profits to function and as long as there are charges consumers will always want them cheaper but that's just the way it is.

WhAt experiences have you had to with PayPal to conclude its arse?

Paypal often withhold withdrawals by failing to reset monthly withdrawal limits so you cant even get your own money, and then dont reply to emails. And the fees they charge are grossly excessive, charging a % even on postage fees. Never mind the problems with buyers.

Same with every card merchant.

No it is not. Mastercard and Visa do not charge 13.5% fees, they do not withhold funds from the user, they provide prompt communication and do not get normally get involved in payment disputes between buyer and seller.

Do you have any experience accepting Mastercard or Visa payments?
