PC Shuts Down Under Load

Hey guys,

Just put my PC back together after having some issues.

My old Enermax PSU died so I replaced it with a OCZ 650W ZT. PC runs fine until I put it under load of a length of time. Playing games such as Shogun 2 or Battlefield 3 causes the PC to just shut off.

The temps of my CPU and GPU seem to be OK and no higher than they were when I had the Enermax.

I would have thought the PSU should have ample grunt to run the card.

Any ideas on what I can check?

System spec is this

Asus Striker Extream
Intel Q6600
4gb OCZ SLI RAM
Gigabyte 480GTX OC Edition

on top of this I am running 4 fans, keyboard, mouse and joystick plus 4 HDD's

Any help would be fab!

NVM, missed last line of text, have you done a power calculator thing? There's several available online I'd suggest trying one to get a rough idea, and also purchase a cheap power monitor to get the real figure.

I would have thought the OCZ would have been powerful enough though you do have 4HDD's and the 480's are notoriously power hungry compared to modern cards like the 670.

Just ran a few of them they suggest 480w PSU would be the minimum needed and 550w is recommended so I am well within that.

I used to have random restarts and shut downs at one point.
It all was down to the CPU fan not being ON the CPU well enough.

Thus each time any load came on, the PC would switch off to prevent any damage to the CPU.

Check your CPU fan, could have gotten loose or broken.
Mine had a loose clip, and after several times of trying, i went ahead and bought myself another fan - no problems since.

will take a gander at the CPU/cables.

the only other PSU I have to hand is a Coolermaster 500W from my wifes PC but I have a feeling that isnt gunna be up to it.

Your SE card is not a normal 480gtx it runs at pretty much a 20% overclock so make sure to include this. Try replugging different 12v rails into the card, by combining the power of 2 rails you may achieve stability. Your board may display a picture but fail under load if you fail to plug the 4 pin power into the board.

Right had a hunt through the case and everything seems to be OK cable wise.

As for noise everything seems to stay the same apart from the Gfx card fans getting faster. Will listen out for the PSU.

I managed 2.5 hours of constant BF3 without any issues no slow down or anything and then it just shut down.

Not sure what you mean bemaniac, my PSU only has 2 PCI-E cables and both of them are in the card. I could rig up 2 molex cables as an extra PCI-E socket but was under the impression that this isnt a good idea.

Just had a look at the Windows Event log and its Error 41, Kernal Power.

One thing I have just thought of, my Motherboard will not post with 4 sticks of RAM unless I increase the Voltage to it. Will try reducing this down to see if that helps.

CPU temps are at 75c max and GPU temps are hitting 80c max

Will get some loggers on the go to see if they are spiking.

Just been playing some Dawn of War 2 which isnt exactly the most challenging game in the world and it has just done the same thing. Dropped the RAM voltage down to auto and it seems to be happy booting with this.

isn't that a little too high?
Shouldn't you be aiming at around 50c?

When your CPU overheats it'll shut down your system to prevent the damage that would cause if it was left as its current state. Try remounting your CPU fan or move your whole system if you have it clammed under a desk so it can get a better intake/outtake.

Cheers will take a look at the CPU tonight, will take the cooler off and reseat it, got a load of thermal paste about so might as well do a proper job lol.

Will report back :)
