Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

I get just over 5 hours with onboard igp.

The hdd caddy takes 2x9.5mm drives or 3 x7mm drives plus the msata slot.

The slot drive is fine on mine.

5 hours is brilliant from a laptop that size!

7mm drives are easy enough to find I guess...

And as long as the drive doesn't grind little triangles onto every disk I think I'll be happy

Anyone had problems with the charger/adapter?

Mine seems to switch between charging and battery when it first boots up it does this for a random amount of time and then stops. Also the switch gfx message comes up and i'm unsure what to do as I've installed all the recommended dell drivers.

The message will come up when you take the power cable out. Sounds like yours is a bit dodgy :(

Anyone know how long it takes for a warrenty to be passes out by dell from the outlet? Bought from a reseller who said he would email on once recieved but it has been awhile

It really depends. My previous R3 took a while to come through because it seems Dell hadn't registered the laptop when leaving their factory. I did hurry them up with a phone call to tell them what the heck was going on and then it came through quite quickly. Maybe the seller has the same problem? Otherwise it should be quite quick, though when transferring a warranty it can take up to 15 business days so Dell say. Hope that helps.

That does help thanks for that. Am loving the laptop so far

Is there a few UK based alienware resellers on the go ?

Quite fancy one but not at the prices on the Dell site.
I bought an Alienware laptop back when the P4 2,8ghz was the processor to have and it cost me a fortune way back then , not sure i could live with buying another >2k laptop ever again !

I can't wait to get myself an R4. I actually had one in my basket last week when quite a few were uploaded tot he inventory including a 680 with 3D screen but I got the rubbish one with 660 and 3610! Grr.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone saw a crazy high-spec'd laptop on eBay worth more than £5k brand new? I bid on it but didn't win. Next day I was offered second chance offer as the seller said the high bidder was a scammer. Anyway, I turned it down cos something just didn't seem right. Now I've seen he sold a number of them and each of the people who were either 2nd chance buyers or the original buyers of the laptop have been scammed. Glad I didn't go for it but still waiting for an R4.

I managed to find one of the bay that was quite local and did a deal in person to avoid ebay fees and such...think i paid around 80 quid or so more then he bought from the outlet...wasnt too bothered as i needed it urgently and was in the process of moving.

Yeah, there quite a lot of systems on eBay. There are some systems which are obviously from the Outlet but aren't too bad for value and I think it's likely that's where I'll be getting mine as about all given up on the outlet now :-( If you can do what Birdysaver did and get it locally or maybe even just pay a genuine seller by Paypal to save them on eBay fees (and so making it cheaper for you) there are some good deals to be had where it'll probably be about £100 more than they paid for it which I guess isn't bad.

Chances are the winner was there to bid you up.

Update on mine, phoned Dell last night about the charger not sitting right and the alienware team went home at 6 so gotta phone when I get back. Hopefully it will get sorted as I leave in 2 1/2 weeks and will be stuck then!

Anyone got any suggestions in terms of carry cases? Looking to get something for when i need to do the odd travel

The Belkin Slim 17" backpack is a good cheap bag that fits the m17x. I have had mine over a year and it still hasn't fallen apart unlike a lot of laptop bags I have bought in the past.
It will fit the laptop psu and a few accessories but not a lot else

Laptop got sorted after speaking to Dell. Turned out I didn't actually update the bios atall ><

Anyone have a good idea for a bag that I can use to travel with? I'm off on a long journey to oz and need something safe and easy to carry.

Haven't looked at the Outlet since the new Alienware models came out. How does this look, price and spec wise?

Looks a bit pricey to me, presumably due to the CPU? Would I be right in thinking the GTX675M isn't as quick as the 7970?

How come they list the AlienFX colour now? Can't you just change it to whatever you want?

Wasn't here in time today (late lunch) but maybe I was reading wrongly but on Tuesday there was a 680 with 3D display and the i7-3720 for £100 less than the one you mention there. It must have been scratch and dent to be that cheap. That's a nice machine despite nearing £1200 delivered though. Lucky b***ard that got it!

Will you upgrade the machine you bagged today Rob?

I don't think I'll buy it actually. I'll watch what comes up for a few days and try to get one with a 7970 or 680. There was one with a 7970 today but it was over £1200 inc due to memory and CPU upgrades.
