Require advice on new PC

The 6 Core CPU Does sound nice and would help a lot.

Would it be safe OC'ing that to 4.5GHZ?

Yes, i believe most people go to 4.7 - 4.8

just look up a guide for oc'ing that processor. or i believe their is an amazing guide to overclocking in general on this forum. follow that and you should be fine.

I have the I7 3770 and i've overclocked that to 4.3 GHZ with a £35 CPU heatsink. im very confident that zalamn cpu heatsink will get you to 4.5 and keep you under the heat threshold (and im still way under threshold)

anyone else think the same? different?

I noticed all the systems mentions are Intel, is AMD / ATI bad now?

Intel for processors are miles ahead. AMD recently came out saying they weren't going to compete on a high level with intel any more for desktop processing as they will be concentrating on mobile processing. Accepting defeat is how i read it.

Graphics cards, Nvidia tend to cost lsightly more and be better stock cards straight out of box. Wheras radeon tend to be slightly cheaper, not as good stock out of box but 10 times better at overclocking than most nvidia cards. So if you like overclocking you can buy a radeon card and bump it up to run at a much higher level.

X79 is quad channel so needs 4 sticks of ram.

AMD is not worth considering at the moment. They gambled on Bulldozer taking the fight to Intel but it pretty much failed.

I am thinking about dunn2010's build with a change of the Ram and the HD, I have got rid of the sound card and optical drive.

I have still yet to make a decision, but the CPU being X79, I change to Quad channel ram (I think its correct), and I increased the HD to 2TB.

Would the change to the ram be correct?

Change of ram is correct. forgot it was quad chan ^^

Just my $0.02 here, but spending that much on a PC, and then buying TN panel monitors that aren't 120Hz is just wrong :D

I'd go down the route of an i7 3770K if you'll use the hyper threading, or a 3570K if you won't, a single 680, and a couple of Dell U2412s or something.

You won't be gaming across two monitors, so you can do without the second GPU for the time being and get yourself some better panels.

As for SSDs, I haven't really paid much attention since I bought mine, but did the issue with the Sandforce controllers ever get fixed? Anyone know? I got a Crucial M4, and it's been perfect.

I only have the 1 Graphics Card ?

Rather then create a new thread I thought I would update this one. With a budget increase, Ideally below £3k would be awesome.

Some specifications have changed and I have had a look at some of components to know what I want for a minimum.

CPU: I Want something like this 2011 i7-3930K
RAM: 16GB (Will need to be Quad Channel due to Processor)
Monitors: I want 2 monitors (Work related), 24" or 27" I am not sure about 3D I would like it, but I believe its a gimmick (until I see it) - will be set to max resolutions
Graphics Card(s): Needed (2 Monitors, please think about the sockets/cables/Case Space)

Soundcard : Not needed, I have one.
HDD : SSD (maybe 2x 120GB Raid 0) ? - Primary HDD (Speed)
Storage: I was thinking of this one Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s
Case: Ideally one with enough room for said components and easy to clean dust filters, (If its annoying to clean I tend to neglect it)
Internal/External: optical drive (Deve or blueRay)
Cooling: No Idea
MotherBoard: No Idea
Thermal Paste: No Idea
Power Supply: No Idea, Preferable Modular

Please point out if i have missed anything, (Cables/Connectors/components)

Thanks for your time, I am sorry for asking again (I just want to make sure my investment pays off).

I guess my previous post got buried, still I'll try again (can't hurt can it)

So Here's the current Basket, I need a graphics card now, any Alterations/Advice would be most welcome, Anything I missed would also be nice to be reminded of.

I plan to run the 2x SSD in RAID 0 (Is there any point or can I save money by single).

Cheers,

PS, The Basket -> Forum post plugin is nice.

Two changes I would highly recommend,

1) Swap the SSD's for - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-028-IN&groupid=1657&catid=2101&subcat=2103

2) You don't need thermal paste (the H100 comes with it already) but if you did want some - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-000-GD&groupid=701&catid=27&subcat=

• You can have the two SSD's in RAID if you really want, or just get a bigger single drive.

• The PSU is a little OTT (but a beauty)

• As for GFX cards, ATI 7970 or GTX680/670 will be good, get one and maybe add a second later?

What would be the reason for the SSD Change please?

OCZ agility3 are poor performers and there use to be a lot of reliability issues with them (may have got better, but meh)

A single 256GB SSD (Samsung830/840pro or Vertex4 or NeutronGTX) will be a solid option also.

EDIT:

After posting your post was updated I notice your choice of Graphics card was 7970 instead of the 680, Do you know what site I could compare these two?

Stock speed cards - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/508?vs=555

But then ATI had a new driver set this week which helps them out - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/23.html

But then Nvidia followed and released a driver that boost performance too - http://www.vortez.net/news_story/nvidia_hit_back_with_geforce_310_33_beta_drivers.html
