Notch Snubs Microsoft, Refuses to Certify Minecraft for Windows 8

Proof read please.

I can see tablet hybrids start to replace laptops with the likes of Surface.
Can't see the desktop for heavy gaming being removed for a while if at all.

As i see it, the markets are only good for one party. Microsoft.

Why just Microsoft?

As we're going round in circles, I'll say what be sad before. Lets see what the markets like in 6 and 10years.

Dont want to type on a tablet. Seen the surface or asus transformers with full keyboards. People who use delves for media consumption are the biggest market share. We aren't in boom time and probably won't be for decades. People generally will not want to buy several devices, especially as one would generaly be used just for games and as you get older game playing time decreases. Which is why pick up and play devices/consoles have such a huge marketshare allready.

It may not be universly supported, but it is the future it is what the general public wants and will buy(as we've allready seen with explosion of iPad and to a lesser extent android tablets).

People are idiots if they think win8 isn't a step forward, you notice I nearly never attack opinion. But try to base it on facts. Win8 is a clear step forward and people like in this thread that say there is no improvement over win7 are utterly wrong. Notice non of that is based on people's opinions, there's simply a huge host of improvements that have been made.

I have no vested interest, other than I like tech. It should be clear what the marketshare is doing and the pros of cross platform for game developers are.

I'd argue that in general, the future is whatever the manufacturers want to push at a given time.

Like how 1200p screens gave way to 1080p screens. There was no argument along the lines of "the general public prefers less pixels, we shall give them what they want".

They realised they could make more profits with 16:9 screens than 16:10 screens. The public gets what they are given.

Tablets are a craze that clever marketeers like Apple have pushed as a "trendy modern device". I wonder if it had been anyone other than Apple, if tablets would have exploded as they apparently have.

I don't know why you're treating it as such a big thing. All this is is Microsoft trying to break in to an already existing market, and using their power and influence as a popular OS developer to try to weed out the competition. It doesn't make Steam any less relevant. It doesn't somehow mean that people are stupid for not immediately buying into this system.

Are you reading what's in front off you?

I don't call people stupid for not immediately buying into the system.
However you can clearly see the advantages for developers and the disadvantages for companies like steam.
Of course it's ms trying to break into the modern growing market.

Did I say it made steam less relevent?

How is it no better. Better SSD support, faster boot, better resource managment.

How is it awesome? What's your definition of awesome?

Nearly all drivers work, there is a hand full that don't. That's got little to do with the OS and everything to do with manufactures and unrepresentative surprise. It's the same companies that haves. Always dragged these heals one driver devlopment.

And don't you think the efforts of MS had some play in this. Making sure they had working drivers out well in advance of release? MS and hardware partners need each other just as much as one another. It's a fallacy to think otherwise, or you end up with another situation like Vista where it's dismissed largely because of poor hardware support initially.

They haven't made the same effort this time as with Windows 7. Asus were at least releasing beta drivers for Xonar on Windows 7 IIRC. Zilch this time.

Non of that changes how good the OS is, especially as its pre release, and companies have time to make drivers. However being the same core, nearly all w7 drivers work anyway.

No they don't have time realistically, I'd be surprised if all the problems are fixed in the next few weeks. It will be after launch date.

But at least we've moved from a position of simply being "awesome" to acknowledging that there are some problems, albeit minor, that need to be resolved.

Moved, nothing's moved it's still awesome. Awesome does not mean 100% issue free, it never has there is issues with everything in the universe, doesn't stop things being awesome. Unless you read it how you want to. If you read windows threads, you should no I've pointed out issues. That doesn't takeaway from how good the issues are.

Also I'm pretty confident that xonar never had beta drivers by this point. They are natorusly slow. Although some companies argue that there's no point making support until RTM is released as code is liable to change and may break any effort they've made.

It's just that like win8, with win7 the vast majoirty of vista drivers worked fine. The issue with vista, is the kernal was changed massively and so previuse drivers did not work.

That's fine then. Maybe if the awesomeness had been qualified from the start we wouldn't have needed this diversion ;)

Please, what are the advantages, exactly?

No offense but EA jumping on board makes me more weary than reassured given their shocking performance on the customer care front.

I was thinking the same thing. Whatever direction EA takes is bound to be the one that is the most profitable and the least advantageous for its customers :p

The bits of Windows 8 that bother me are those that have been designed with tablets and phones in mind - i.e Metro and the App Store.

I just want a version of Windows that allows me to browse the internet and play Steam games. If I want to play casual games I have my iPhone for that. I also cannot see the merit in Metro on a standard desktop PC, to me it's just bloatware.

I'll move to Windows 8 if Microsoft add the option to uninstall Metro/App Store. It's not just about not using them, when I have an SSD that is still quite expensive in terms of £/GB I don't want that space taken up with rubbish I won't ever use.

The Microsoft fanatics just won't accept any criticism of Windows 8, in the end what will be will be and no amount of arguing will change it.

As far as I'm concerned any advantages Windows 8 brings is overshadowed by the repulsive new UI and sidelining the desktop to a mere side application, I'm not in a minority. Perhaps I will be forced to update one day but until then Windows 7 will remain my OS of choice, in the meantime I hope Linux gaming will get the attention it needs from all of those developers resenting Windows 8 and the direction Microsoft is heading.

You mean apart from an extremely cheap way of getting to market with chap advertising. Isn't this what most people have been saying they want for music and film. Ok this isn't film and music. But allows anyone to create an app and beget it to mass market with little funding at all. It's taken away the publishers greediness. Can't you see that since apple market was born, followed by android and windows. There has been the creation of thousands more apps that just wouldn't of been made and given the developers a chance to earn good wages and the competition that gives. How is that not good for the consumer?

almost like steam, except with steam you don't need any funding at all.

And steam has access to how many devices?
Also steam isn't going anywhere. Win8 does not block it at all, ms don't take any off steams monie either. So yes it is like steam, but with better support and more connected devices. On ms store every app has a demo period (or if my memory isn't broken a no quibble refund period) apps also go through a basic security and compatibility check. Which again is better for consumers.
Steam having competition is a good thing, especially when there's these benefits that steam need to try and catch up on. It's also hardly excessive funding needed $49 for individuals and $99 for companies and as far as Ii know that let's you upload as many apps as you want.
