Crucial v4 set up help.

Hi again,
I've put one of my ATTO bench's along side yours and the difference in write speeds is very noticeable. Although the reads are not consistent I don't think its a poor SATA controller as it IS capable of transferring the data at similar speeds to mine in certain parts of the test.
I'm no expert so I can't say that for sure but this give some degree of understanding whats actually happening with regard to speeds.

I'd love to sort this issue out as it could have been me in your position. Right now if I was to ask you to do a few things to resolve this would be:
Ensure AHCI is on ( Im sure you did this)
Remove all other drives (just unplug) you will need to leave cd/dvd in for Win install!
Do full install of Win7 and opt to format the drive during the procedure
Once there - don't update windows or anything except install Internet Security of your choice update it and add any drivers you may need.
Then run the bench tests again

Hope this helps

Just a thought - being that this is effectively a clone of a clone, there could be a lot of garbage on the drive - any way to force TRIM to run and clean it up?

your not properly 4k aligned imo, those figures are awfull, they should be around 250mb read/write

install the latest intel rapid storage drivers aswell if your running an intel board

you should format the drive to 4096mb

Try the option Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing. That's on the Policies page for the device properties in Device Manager.

Unfortunately it was already off - would have been a nice easy fix :( (previously had a 120Gb Corsair Force 3 in there)

As one last throw of the dice I'm going to swap the Corsair back in and see what speeds it gives - if they are decent then I'll go through the pain of the fresh install.

Is there a sticky on formatting/aligning new SSDs - can't find much either here or on Crucial's site.

if using win7 it will align it for you,but to make sure select 4096mb from where it says auto when you format it,normal format should be ok

you can do a secure erase if you want with parted magic and a usb stick

That's a real pity mate, I struggled all weekend with my new V4 before I came across that suggestion on a forum somewhere.

As soon as I changed that setting, it felt like my PC just took off!

Will give that a go when I have some time - as an update I think I can rule out the laptop as the issue - Atto on my old Force 3:

Thaaaat's more like it!

Might be relevant... when I cloned the disk originally from the Force3 to the v4 Acronis wouldn't play at all - either in Windows or Boot - had to use a different programme to get it done?

Did you try any or all of these suggestions?

I tried cloning a couple of times - used Clonezilla in the end as it was the only one that worked.

I might give a fresh install a go as I still have the Corsair (it's in now!) so I have a redundant install which is nice!

I spoke to Crucial direct and they were very nice - even took the time to check the thread to save me repeating myself! They have suggested an RMA so I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a defect with the drive.

You should always try a fresh install - it may take a couple of hours but that is a lot less time than this thread has been going.

Actually it has taken about 36 hours with the many, many, many updates and the incremental re-install to try and identify the issues - not to mention the backup of business data and restoration of all our work settings - unfortunately this isn't just my gaming machine, and a re-install is no small matter!

However... The pain appears to have been worth it :D
I decided to check the speeds as the updates progressed and it was quite telling to see how much better the latest drivers are compared to the default windows ones:

Fresh install: (windows default drivers) - pre service pack!

Final Install:

What a relief! Not quite up to the speeds others have seen on the writes, but certainly a lot better than before - I'll have a play around and make sure all the standard SSD settings are correct and can bump that last little bit, but given how old my chipset is I'm not really surprised!

Thanks for all the help - and I have to say I've been really impressed with both Crucial and OcUK who have been very helpful throughout - glad I don't have to RMA after all! :p
