Hi Guys

My mum is having an issue with a builder.
What's happened is, mum bought a house that needed completely gutting, plumb, electrics, building work etc etc.
Mum has a very large sum of money in the bank so doing this work is not an issue.
The builder who was given the job was relieved of their duties on the 2nd day due to a number of factors, turning up late, not taking on board what was being asked to be done and also not being able to give a definate figure to carry out the work and saying they are going to be on the job for in my eyes and everyone else's eyes an unreasonable and lengthy time.
Given the fact, no quote for the work as given, with no breakdown of work carried out, this builder has now invoiced my mum for X amount for his days work ( knock down a 3mSQ porch in the house )

If he was unable to provide a quote for all his work, how can he provide an invoice for this work carried out.

And yes, mum has gone about this in a round about way, my mum tends to trust people more than she should and I guess thats the reason why I think she didn't get an exact figure from his as he was given his recomendation from a lady in the village and trusted he was going to be straight with her.

any help with this would be very much appreciated

Pay him for what he has done and then get a proper builder to do the rest of the work. The fact that he did not give a quote does not mean that you should not pay him for work he has carried out, IMO.

Thanks guys thats what ive suggested

is just short of £500 a reasonable rate for a days work lol, and turning up late the next day

So two days work? Or sent home as soon as he arrived late ?

Depends totally on the Jon and wether he took rubbish away etc etc

I'd say no but I'm not a builder and I would have agreed a price before letting him start so this couldn't happen

I agree with magnolia. He should have given you a quote with all of the work he is going to do and then let you check it. A lot of the time when builders are doing the job, things crop up in the job that haven't been quoted for so the price can go up or down but this still shouldn't stop anyone giving a quote at the beginning. Pay him and get someone better and have a look on the FMB website for certified builders.

Its all sorted now, new builder is in there and is nearly done, he has said this guy was taking mum for a ride

did he remove the waste material from the porch he knocked down? waste can cost quite a bit to tip off.
if it was for labour only was he by himself? or did he have lads with him that also needed a days wage?

Pay him to get rid.

The next one get a proper quote and contract of work signed that agrees extent of work, timescale and price.

Anything goes wrong there should be no argument...

And whatever you do don't pay them a huge chunk of cash upfront, agree milestones and payment for work done.

Paying unknown builders large sums of money upfront is a huge risk.

then he took the **** :(
pay him by cheque, he wont like that

+1

Rather steep price for the work.

Just pay him & put it down to experience, & learn from your mistakes.
You argue with him about costs, he would probably be a ******* & put it through the small claims court, seen that done more than once.
