Why don't we pump more money into space exploration?

I just cant understand that.

Why do we as a race just accept that we are here on this planet and not care what else is out there? It should be top of priority's in my opinion.

Because there is more to gain from spending money here on Earth on things that matter to us right now, than to waste money sending a few guys to Mars for no real reason other than it's pretty cool. Seriously, what would we actually gain out of it, me and you? Nothing. Even with all the money in the world it will be a long time before we would be at a level of space exploration that would actually be useful.

We know less about the depths of our oceans than we know about the surface of the moon. What about solving the impending energy crisis? World hunger issues? The environment? Water shortages? Overpopulation?

Exploring space, the "final frontier" sounds great and I'd love for us to be able to zip about on space ships, but there are much more pressing matters that require our attention right now.

its things like this that flag up how bizarre the whole concept of money is,
can you imagine an alien asking why we hadn't explored further when we are capable of doing so, and explaining its because we don't have enough of this thing called money

You ever wonder what the people on the space station do with their days...

I mean yeah, the first few weeks I can imagine you'd be so damn happy... I'M IN SPACE.

But then......No internet, No Phone....No OUTSIDE!! I imagine they have DVDs but I cannot imagine they have a big selection!

explore? what do you think there is another earth behind the sun?

do you think mars has habitable zones we have not found yet?

we are 100's of years from being able to colonise (as in more than just a small science lab) or mine the moon.....

Who said anything about colonising?

Do you really believe that there are no other habitable planets out there? Among the trillions of stars we have discovered?

Its because of close minded people like you that we will probably never find these things out.

A reputable study costed a potential mars mission at half a trillion dollars for just one mission. We simply can't afford it. Besides, space exploration always fails miserably under cost-benefit analysis. The argument that it indirectly increases technological innovation isn't really valid as those technologies could have been researched cheaper directly if we had chosen to do so.

Incredibly valuable asteroids are out their in great numbers, but if they can't be mined profitably, (in £ profit or even in energy profit) then it doesn't matter how valuable they are.

there is nothing that can be done to make interstellar travel pactical in my life time or my clindrens, or their childrens...

even getting into orbit is a major undertaking with current technology

as long as some funding goes to R&D thats fine... if you throw 10x the money at something you dont get 10x faster progress...

In an RTS, you don't just camp your resource-rich starting point. You immediately expand and grow resources far and wide before developing them into solid bases. Why aren't we doing that? How do we know there aren't aliens out there rushing us right now?

Basically comes down to greed.

Same question can be asked for many things for example: why carry on making guns instead of throwing all that money at cancer research?.

It's a never ending loop of how crap humanity really is. :)

need to be a truely world effort to make big things happen,

ideally (ie not going to happen) we all scrap our defense budgets and pool it into space exploration (and a lot more areas. could actually see some amazing things happen!

durrr... they get netflix :)

i have heard that plants grow quite well in space so i would be setting up some form of hydro setup.... get smashed and stare at the stars

How could anyone even think about wasting money on space exploration when there are still starving people in the world?

We should all just wallow here on Earth jerking off our dopamine receptors with fast food, reality TV, console games and feel-good Comic Relief fundraiser (so 3rd world people can one day do the same thing) until a giant asteroid kills us all.
