is GTX 660 much of an upgrade from GTX 470?

my best mate is going to give me £100 to put towards a gpu and I'm going to gie him my 470 (he has nothing atm) I'm pretty sure I want to stick with NVIDIA as it is purely for one mmo Darkfall UW and the first one ran much better on NVIDIA cards.

Ah ok wicked, I'm sure the gap can only get larger as they bring out newer drivers? So begs the question which 660? it's to go with 3570k, and i don't mind oc'ing the 660 if it oc's well

MSI/Gigabyte/EVGA or KFA2 would be my only choice because of warranty and returns. Nobody want to be without a crucial component for weeks.

I notice quite a price difference from 660 to 660ti , is it much of a difference performance wise?

Personally if you are thinking about a 660TI, I would be looking a little further at the 670 (offers better performance for not much more) or even looking at the 7950's from AMD. Some very good bargains to be had from 'team red'

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660TI OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £269.99
1 x MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Sleeping Dogs PC Game £263.99
Total : £545.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

As you can see from that bench, the 7950 (with the boost) offers a much higher performance at a lesser price. I have picked 2 cards that I would consider buying.

Hmm so really your selling your GTX 470 to your 'best mate' for £100. Seems a lot for a 470 tbh :p.

Why not grab a HD 7850 2GB, nice upgrade from the 470, more performance, twice the ram. low power use etc. Cheap aswell...

GTX 660's are way to overpriced atm, either a HD 7850 or get a GTX 670 over the 660...

Deffo go for the 7950 if your mate is giving you £100 for a 470. This means you only have to pay £164 for a seriously good GPU.

Edit:

I should be asking what the rest of your rig is?

^^ Nice rig :). In that case, if your budget allows, go for the 7950 :)

The problem is i have like a mental block about amd gpu's even though i don't think it warrants the lack of faith in them? I'm sure this is the only forum people could kind of understand that aha :(

Agree, 7950 or spend a little more and get a GTX670 if you want to stay with NVIDIA.

£100 for a GTX470...any chance your mate fancies another one for SLI? I'd happily sell mine for that!;)

Hehe, well he knows we both getting something out of it, I did give him my old rig for free after all :) and thanks for the advise, 7950 or push the boat and get the GTX 670 it is thanks again!

660 would be a reasonable upgrade, and probably just about worthwhile when factoring in price / performance / overclocking, though a 7950 / 670 would be the ideal move.

Fairplay to you! Which ever you go for, it'll finish off your system nicely. The pick of the 670's would be the Gigabyte Windforce 3X which can be had for a tad over £300.

It's fine to go with either company, as long as you are making sure you are getting the best bang for bucks card for your budget and is performing better on the games you play (some games perform better with Nvidia card, while some perform better with AMD card).

However it is also depending on if you need specific features, like for example if 3D and PhysX matters to you of make a difference to the games you play, then it might be better to stick with Nvidia; where as if GPGPU is what matters to you, then the 79xx cards would be better than Nvidia's current gen's offering.
