nvidia or amd card?

Well I just took the plunge and ordered 2x XFX 7950s for £408 (£400 after cashback and hopefully £370 after selling the free games). Hoping I got a good deal, will either keep both cards or sell one if I don't see a decent gain with xfire. :)

Considering GTX 680s are still £370-400 I think it's a pretty decent price for xfire...

Great deal you got there for the price, hope they clock well :)

Thats why I've taken a fresh look at amd. I had ruled them out up to now but the nvidia voltage issue plus the pricing when they're on offer make 'em quite attractive. I say quite cos theres always room for 'em to come down more.

What do you mean nVidia voltage issue? They've never been able to be over-volted except with hardware mods/BIOS updates.

You should read the actual thread properly as unless you were planning to get an EVBot it is exactly the same as it's always been.

Yeah, I read about that, kinda sad they take away the warranty.

The guy on xtreme, he can alter power limits, change default fan settings, default voltages.

Ahh looks like he's just doing it for the Nvidia 660 cards >> http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?282713-GTX-660ti-Owners-Club/page2

I can understand why they would do that and it is Nvidia doing the same to the AIB's who add any kind of over volting. The shape of things to come from both sides?

Can't really expect them to honour a warranty if they GI e you up to 1.8v on the 7970

Imagine if MalX got hold of afterburner extreme! You could smell the burning varnish for miles:D

Somebody had to :D but yer, unless you are going for the world record and using LN2, I can see no reason other than stupidity for going that high on volts.

Old. This has been done :)

I never said it was new.. just stating that it happened and makes me wonder what other companies might be up to. I told a mate to get the 7850 Power Edition from OCuK and it made me wonder if MSI have messed with that one as he aint got a clue about tech stuff. His free copy of Sleeping Dogs crashes at the loading screen and i have no clue why it does that.

I'm sure the 7850 will be fine, nearly all the 7xxx cards have voltage control, all the reference cards do, so there's not much that MSI need to 'mess with'.

Its just that nvidia went to such great lengths to stop voltage increases on their cards, that's why MSI had to think outside the box to get around it, which they did in a questionable way.

No worries, I was just pointing it out. Seems a few AMD users are having the same problem and it is game related.

No probs :) I do feel sorry for the guys who have the game from day 1 release and still can't play it. I would want a refund and buy it after it gets sorted (could get it a fair bit cheaper).

I was actually going to go for an msi 670 power edition which I understand will also be affected by the nvidia over voltage equals no warranty to AIB and therefore the card won't have that option any longer in afterburner.

Yea i feel bad for him as when i got my copy after him.. mine fired up first time and it p***ed him off even more :p At least its not just an AMD thing as a few Nvidia users are getting the same problem.

I just scoured the thread looking for Mod replies TBH. I understand it is hard with millions of different PC configurations for the devs but it still does not help those that bought it and still can't play it.

I am in the same boat and have no worries at all (2*MSI Lightning 680's). There will always be a work around and I am happy to fiddle with config files to get things working :)

Get gtx 670 price/performance

No. Way overpriced compared to a 7950 or even a 7970
Yeah Nvidia are overpriced, only reason Nvidia can price them so high is because they still sell more, check out http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/?sort=chg

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it, but Nvidia are better for drivers.

I don't think the latest games have much problems at all with AMD drivers, a couple of older games I had didn't work properly back when I had a 6950, so I bought a GTX 580 and since had 2 more Nvidia cards.

If you post a graphics issue on the AMD forums, no one bothers to take notice especially if it's an older game.

I'm going to get shouted at for this but I don't care as it applies in general not just graphcs cards as well:

If you consistently lower your prices in response to the competition it gives the impression of an inferior product...

I'm not saying it's true; I'm saying it's just what that kind of strategy implies.

People that come and discuss the pro's and con's on a graphics card forum are quite small compared to the masses and while you and I both know it's not true it undoubtedly costs them sales to Nvidia as well as brings more in due to the lower price point. I'm not qualified enough to estimate how many sales it costs them compared to how many it brings in :D.
