British scientists are to mimic black holes in the laboratory as part of a £2.35 million project looking at how matter and energy interact.

The team from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh will produce laser pulses whose energy is measured in trillions of watts.

They will be used to simulate conditions found around a black hole, a place where mavity is so strong that light cannot escape and the normal laws of physics break down.
Well thats all and well, but what if they can't control it.

Lol Daily Fail... Oh wait! With such a headline, it was only fair of me to assume. Well, maybe not, it didn't mention them causing cancer.

One theory suggests that the LHC has created thousands of micro-Black Holes since it started full operation. For those who weren't aware, Black Holes evaporate by Hawking Radiation, and very small ones last such a tiny fraction of a second that it can't be measured. A Black Hole large enough to last even a second is far bigger than anything we can create for the foreseeable future.

And I wish people were less smug with knowledge they possessed that others don't. Maybe that way they could enlighten rather than mock.

Could they actually create a real black hole if they wanted to? I thought black holes were formed by collapsing stars?

And if they did create one how quickly would it grow?

If everybody understood physics better then you wouldn't be so clever and special, would you diddums?

This isn't about me being clever, this is about educating yourself to avoid a) hysteria and b) bad science journalism. I didn't know this pre-LHC hysteria, but I spent the time to read up on it, as should most people.

Ugh... its too early in the morning! Can someone give me the short easy version?
