1 GTX690 or 2 AMD 7970s ?

They're not twice as likely - much less than that - there are a lot of other components to consider rather than "just" the GPU cores.

Also, the GTX690, due to whatever they've done with the on-board bridge, has less microstutter than 2xGTX680.

If it does go wrong, that's what the warranty is for... the GTX690 is also so over-engineered, it overclocks almost as well as two independent card (infact, the memory usually goes higher) and it runs cooler than all the reference 680s.

In the past, especially with the GTX590 - I would have agreed with you... with the 690, nvidia have really produced something special IMO.

How come one has more ram than the other and what is it compermising if anything by having that extra ram ?
How do they differ in the ways that they do ?
I know one has 4098 of Vram but at what cost if any ?
Can 2 of the same be SLI , like the other types ?
How does that extra Vram affect gaming if if at all ?

Open them up in different tabs and compare them :D.

Unless you're going 3-way SLI and Surround (triple screen gaming) you can safely drop the idea of getting a 4GB card though.

690 4GB is fine because it's 2GB per GPU.

You can get 2x670 for that kind of money, mental money to pay for any single gpu, that isn't that much better than the rest in it's range.

The 680 isn't worth the money when the 670 is sitting so close in performance, same goes for the red team.

Personally, I have found both Xfire and SLI to be more hassle than it is worth. For every game that scales and works correctly, there is another that suffers glitches or scales poorly. If I had to choose one, I think SLI is more polished.

I would also prefer 2x GTX680 over 1x GTX690. Two cards are cooled better, will probably overclock better, have the slight benefit of 2x PCI-E interface, and should also be more reliable.

I think if you used a GTX 690 compared to 2x ref GTX 680s you might find it quite interesting. The 690s don't have a micro stutter problem some people get with SLI, use less power, make less noise, run at PCI-e 3 (without a hack) and when it comes to ocing will give the ref 680s a run for their money.

For multi monitor gaming the 680s should always be first choice though as they do have the edge on ocing.

Having said that 1 x GTX 690 or 2 x MSI 680 lightnings, I would go for the lightnings but thats a whole different game.

I watercool my cards so don't have to worry that much about heat exhaustion, but this round I went for the 690. It takes up half as much space as 2 cards and performs within a few fps when oc'd

Why are the lightnings a whole different game ?
what is or is not special about them ?
