BT Infinity - how do they lay the fibre optic cable

Where I live they dont lay it at all :(

It is ridiculous, that despite only being 1 mile from the exchange, that they will not lay cables here due to being a "semi rural" location, small village without the required population for them to make enough money.......BUT ITS ONLY 1 MILE OF FIBRE FFS!

Tell them you'll pay for it to be laid and when they come back with the quote, remember it's just money and you'll have a mile of fibre to show for it ;)

I've got cabling coming via telephone poles to my house wondering if they'll even manage to do it, rates are terrible but I'm less than 2KM from the exchange and the entire distance from it to my house is via built up areas.

Fingers crossed, allegedly I'll have 55-58mb download (estimate) by end of december.

they dont lay the fibre through the telegraph poles lol it goes to a cabinet in your street somewhere then it uses the good old copper wires to your house.
Your speed will depend on how close to a cabinet and how long your line is

Funny.

The population of the village is 4496 with a mix of young families, middle aged and elderly - I think that there would be a decent take up of fibre if it were laid and they would easily make a return on the investment.

Have you thought about getting all those that might be interested to contact BT so they can see there may be a viable market for fiber?

I am far too much of an intorvert to consider such things :p

Maybe I could put a notice up in the community centre getting people to sign a survey online or something.

there is no one way to lubricate

Pulling lubrication eh?
May have to try that on friday night, this lynx stuff doesn't seem to work...

I thought in places they also used an umbrella type thing which they put in the pipe with the cable attached the blast it down the run of pipe with compressed air?

Edit, it's called cable blowing, and that 'thing' is called a missile!
If you search on youtube there's a vid of someone doing it with a fibre optic cable.

Was talking about this to a colleague a minute ago and we didn't know how they'd do it?

Can anyone in the know offer their insight? How do they feed a fibre optic cable 2-3 miles from an exchange to a local cabinet?

Its fed (blown through a tube - as mentioned earlier) through existing/new ducting in segments. It isn't one long bunch of fibres from exchange to cabinet, there will be joints along the way! If they hit snags, such as duct blockages then they'll locate the position and dig down and fix the broken duct and then carry on.

edit; in fact, here is a pretty good video demonstrating how it's done

HAHAHAHAHAHAHLLOLOLOLLMFAAAAOOOOOOO HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA HHHEEEEEEHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HE THOUGHT THEY USED ROPE TO PULL CABLES THROUGH DUCTS!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! ****ING HAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Not quite as ridiculous as you seem to find it, for short runs it's quite common for them to stick a pipe with a length of rope already run through it before they put it in the ground. Then they do literally tie it to the rope and pull it through. Used a lot on building construction sites, our guys do it like that for new electrical cables on treatment works which may only run 50-100m between buildings/tanks for example however yes it would be ridiculous for long runs!

So what do they actually do? Just sit at the exchange pushing 3 miles of fibre optic cabling along the underground tubes? What happens if it snags on something? Not to mention that it will start to bend and get very hard to keep feeding along after a while due to the weight of the cabling.

There's manhole covers on the street that can be used to access the cable.

They were installing it recently in our area using the drains. One van at one opening and another at the next opening and they just fed the cable through.
