If you're single, working 30+ hours a week, on minimum wage, no kids, over 25, no other income, I calculate you get about £150 per year working tax credits. The problem is, I've been told by someone that works for the job centre you will get £2,000 a year working tax credits.

I've gone through all the sites/calculators on this question and it still comes out to basically less than £200 quid a year.

Can anyone clarify if this daft bint at the job centre is right.

Hmm, I just did the WT calculator based on £11,500 a year (which is approx 35hrs / wk @ min wage) and it shows £350 - but that is from now, 10th Oct to 5th April next year - so 5 1/2 months.

It must taper off pretty quickly then as at £5,000 income for the year it is £1,324 for the same period.

So the £150 you see is prob for the 5 month period so maybe ~£350 / year

Are you sure it's not £150 per month, that would be £1,800 a year then.

Definitely ~£200 a year, according to the HRMC site and others. I'm not sure why this woman is so adamant it's £2,000, hence why I need to know from someone that is actually doing this.

£1,920 is the maximum 'basic' amount / year.

But this tapers off depending on what you earn. So this goes from the maximum when earning say £6,000 a year down to £0 if you earn £14k a year

I don't understand our taxation system, if folks on this low a draw are to be given free money, so they keep working and stay off benefits would it not be more appropriate to change the taxbands, so the money is never taken then repaid, and causing levels of administration that are uncalled for?

The rich would rise up and launch their silver spoons of plushness and down the poor man with his min wage wand of nothingness.
