Worth upgrading from a GTX 570 to a 7950 at 1440p?

I should hopefully have received my new monitor by the end of the week (a Yamakasi Catleap). I'm using a GTX 570 at the moment. It runs great at 1200p, but I think vram might become an issue at 1440p, which is what my new monitor runs at natively.

Would it be worth upgrading?

What's the general lowdown on the 7950. I've heard mostly good things about it. Good value for money, good overclocker, etc, but are there any drawbacks I should be wary of? I saw some BF3 benchmarks which didn't exactly blow me away.

Welllllllll I might have the golden answer for you :)

I received my 7950 today after replacing my asus 570 direct cu ii. Well all I'm saying is I'm blown away. Overclocks like a beast and bf3 never drops bellow 60 and it averages at 90 fps ish.

Can't beat user experience like that! :)

the 7950 is a great upgrade from a 570 and the extra VRAM will be a needed bonus at your res.

From Geo Gamers post, his 7950 is faster than a single 680 because I have seen my single 680 drop to 52 fps when tanks are being blown up. This is at 1080P with full ultra.

Glad I can help :)

When I had the 570 I played at 60 fps but that wasn't at ultra , I had it at high with hbao off, antianilising Deffered off and anIsotropic filter off. With all that it managed at 60-70, with it on forget about it hitting constant 60 fps as the VRAM just got over run . Now with the 7950 I average 80/90 fps with everything maxed. So you can see the difference is night and day really :)

What is your average fps mate on ultra? I'd put a 680 way above a 7950, that's like a golden card in my eyes lol

Wow, that really is impressive. Thanks for the feedback. I currently run my 570 overclocked to 850 core, with everything on ultra except with no MSAA. That usually keeps me at 60FPS, except for when there's a lot of smoke onscreen. For some reason that causes a bit of a drop.

GG, I take it you're playing at 1080p? I would expect the difference would be even more noticable at 1440p.

Yup I'm at 1080p

Sweet. Looks like I will sell my 680's and buy 2 7950's if they are smashing the 680's that much :)

MM here I come :)

Hehe well I've only tested it for half hour on strike st karkand and managed to get 1150 / 1500 oc within the 30 mins and I had to go. Tomorrow I'm going to test it all day and try get 1200 core. I will come back and let you know how the card is performing on a full day of bf3 :D

Use Fraps to log lowest/average/highest fps and this will give you all the info you need. I ran my test for 1200 seconds on Caspian Border 64 MP. This will give an accurate indication.

Glad you are enjoying it though and cracking priced card :)

I was considering upgrading from a 570 to a 670 or 7950 (~1080p) but after looking through many reviews the 7950 just doesnt seem to me to offer enough of an improvement. I'll buy a 670 once the custom ones come below £300.

570 will run out of VRAM easily.

I'm running sli 570's at 1080p 120hz and if i set everything to ultra i get Vram issues and 2 fps.

Picking up my 670 FTW tommorow hopefully so will be able to sell the 570's then and be back to ultra settings.

Run a min/max/avg benchmark using Fraps or something similar. This will give you a better idea. And get in the action as well and play normally otherwise you could give people the wrong impression.

Enjoy! :)
