Hey guys,

I'm going to a 3 day workshop as of tomorrow at the Microsoft campus in Reading.

Sounds odd but...I don't really know what to expect? :p - I've never been on a single IT Related course in my life, infact the last time I was in a classroom was when I took my Driving theory test 7 years ago  and before that, GCSE's!

Stupid questions but hey ho they need to be asked...

How do people typically dress at these days? Is it full on casual? smart? half way in between? (I don't want to be the most underdressed cretin there)

Do I take my laptop? Do I just take a notepad and pen?

Any info appreciated :)

Best,
Jake

I've been up a few times for Dynamics NAV events, once on a day long training session and also product launches. For training I would go for full on casual. Certainly take a laptop and pen and paper sounds like a good idea. What course are you doing up there?

SCCM 2012 Workshop.

I'm thinking of smart jeans with a shirt and maybe a suit jacket?

Off-topic:

Maybe I'm being naive, but why would you need to be dressed smartly if you're going on a course? I've been to a Global Knowledge (IT training courses -- MS/Cisco/etc) and everyone apart from the lecturers I've ever seen there were all dressed casually. Is this not the same kind of thing? (Again, maybe I'm just being naive and it is in fact something completely different).

are you paying for it or is your company?

will there be others there who have paid to be there themselves?

If you're there representing your company etc.. then whack a suit on for the first day at least (can always remove tie/dress down etc..)

if its just some course and there will be others on it who've simply paid to attend then wear what you like/whatever you're most comfortable in tbh...

Jeans, polo or smart shirt. Presentable, but stick the suit. It's a course, not a client meeting.

I'd wager most will be techy types in tshirts or polos.

If you turn up in a suit on an IT training course you'll forever be know "as that muppet who turned up in a suit on an IT training course"

Its casual. I go on courses with the people i manage. I go casual. They go casual. We all go casual. I've been doing this for 20 years. Believe me.

Training courses I've generally gone in jeans and a polo shirt or the like, pretty casual as it generally doesn't matter.

If it's a more formal event however like a seminar type thing then I've gone a bit smarter in shirt+tie/suit.

All the stuff I've been to at MS before has been pretty 'business' like so have suited up, done been to a training event there before though.

Smart jeans and polo, shirt and trousers if you really have to. Do NOT turn up in a suit, you will look a right plonker.

Fair enough I'll go casual then :)

As I said I've never really been on any courses before so I wasn't sure.

My company have paid for it, although I wouldn't say I'm representing them at all.
