An ally spider?

No instructions when you get the bike 2nd hand, wheels already built up by someone else.

Can it be filed down to smooth and still used OK? Whack a new cassette on and hope for the best?
 
Spider, the bit of the cassette that holds all the gears together and makes contact with the hub body. If its steel or individual gears then it just munches into the hub like in the picture.
 
Yeah it's steel, looks like a cheapy Shimano cassette. Ah well, new body gonna be ordered soon methinks. On a different note...

A lot of cassettes have individual cogs with only the few largest ones being on a spider (whether steel or alu) so it's hard to avoid.

Yeah it will be fine, I had to file a few bits down to remove the cassette when I went from 9 to 10 speed last year.
 
Best one i have found is the SRAM ones that are coloured, only the smallest 3 or 4 gears are individual. Its the one downside to these hubs, shame no one makes a stainless or titanium replacement.

Finally got the go ahead from physios to be able to ride my bike again, 6months after my crash, snaping my ALC, tearing my MCL and Cartlidge disk. Felt soo good getting back down the skatepark, and doing my first 360 in that long.

Need to sort a rear brake on the 24 and start saving Mega 2013 :) Oh and get a new DH bike lol. Anyone seen any really banging deals on Sessions or Demos?

I went for a set of Hope tech M4 Evos with 203mm front rotor and 180mm rear.

I don't like paypal and ebay after being done for a lot of money in the past and paypal being useless. I couldn't find anywhere near as good a deal on the Formula brakes as i got on the hopes. Hopefully they will do what i want and i won't regret it.

looking at ordering a new front tyre, fancy a maxxis swmpthing CRC have them for £28 and they 2.5's in dual ply version this sound a good deal?
For the back tyre i'm un-decided on if i should put the 2.4 high roller to the back, keep my 2.1 maxxis advantage or purchase a Maxxis Larsen which i think my localish shop as 2.3 or 2.35's
