Edinburgh - What to See and Do?

Think i'll be making a trip here after Christmas, the girlfriend want to see the panda's.
I've heard great things about the city, i like the sound of the whiskey tour :-)

I know a girl who conducted tours of the Vaults and the Close, creepy ass places. Even a lot of people who still refuse to believe in that sort of activity do leave feeling disconcerted or anxious. Staff on their own have had all sorts of experiences.

I wish I'd known that before as I'd have interviewed her for my book! I love writing about Edinburgh's dark side - it's a fascinating place. They do say that if ghosts were ever to exist the South Bridge Vaults would be the place they were found...

...all good Hallowe'en stuff!

Another vote for Mary Kings close. Very interesting and guides do a good job of making it spooky and fun. My gf had to be told not to swear in front of the kids after she shouted an expletive at one point :p

Some pubs weren't letting groups of over three men in at a time for some reason?

Depends where you are in the city but Edinburgh is very popular as a destination for stag parties so that might be why they weren't letting in groups of lads - some pubs don't want to encourage that sort of thing, they'd got their quota in already or alternatively maybe they just didn't like the look of you. :p

Alheckz, one day maybe just, you will come to release that Leith is apart of Edinburgh.. ;)

Leith doesn't want to be part of Edinburgh, the Leithers I know tend to think of themselves as a separate breed anyway and I'm happy enough to let them carry on with that belief...

Most of what I'd suggest to do has already been mentioned but if it's a nice crisp winters day then a trip up Arthur's Seat can be a nice thing to do, you get good views from there and it's a nice little bit of exercise. If you're down by Dynamic Earth anyway it's easy enough to carry on from there.

Not all of them suited for your purposes mind :p ;)

Yeah it always fascinated me growing up as a child, fantastic place to grow up and live.

Interesting views about Leith, I may just step outside and ask some folks. I think I will get some yes and no answers. But I will post the results. Anyway Leith is a very decent and welcoming place.

Arthurs seat is a great walk/run.

I know an AMAZING Mexican there, but I'm sworn to secrecy so it doesn't get too busy!

I coulndt believe when someone told me you have to pay an extra tenner to get to see the panda. the zoo already costs a fortune.

The whatever you call the military parade at the castle is excellent, I don't know if it will coincide with when you're going though.

The Toy Museum - VERY CREEPY
How? Tell me more!

I've always wanted to take a trip up to Edinburgh but haven't had time to do any planning yet. Disappointed to hear about the Zoo though as I really wanted to go see the Pandas - probably won't now after reading about how bad the Zoo is :(

You don't - at least I didn't, anyway.

Edinburgh is a beautiful city and one of my favourite (Actually probably my favourite) in the UK.

Much has been covered already but one thing thats worth doing is a day trip into the Highlands.

It's three floors if I remember, covering well a history of toys. What it really is to be honest is a collection of victorian aged stuff in the main, but it is interesting.

What is quite strange or creepy about it is the dolls on the ground floor and mock rooms elsewhere with mannequins setup I think from vague memories...

As a kid all I can really remember was a huge battlefield with smoke and all sorts of greatness.

Another freebie is the People's Story museum just across from it..

It's not bad, it's just not great either. It's long been needing a revamp but conservation areas and costs have been prohibative. The enclosures have been needing expansion and like all things development wise in Edinburgh it takes forever or doesn't happen at all. Last thing I read it wasn't the zoo getting to push out over the boundry walls, it was the monkeys getting up to the adjacent overhanging trees and bounding off into the forest..
