Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Yep. Even more so with Windows RT as with the new app model there should be no reason why you couldn't stack upgrades ad infinitum and not run into issues.

Using a full proper Windows 8 32 bit Pro install on my Acer Iconia Tablet.
Seems nice enough, but some gestures just seem sloppy.

Closing windows by sliding your finger down with it, sounds fine until realise the window doesn't move with your finger so it just feels wrong.

Going to highlight an item on the metro screen, have to keep finger on and move down, why not just keep finger on and then bring up the menu?

Oh well.

thanks very informative :) so i take it you did an upgrade from win 7 ? and have you noticed any perfornance difference ? is the win 8 upgrade faster on start up and shut down etc ?

I've done both, think I've 4 PCs on Windows 8 now, 2 were initially upgraded but I've since done resets on them (not because of any Win8 reasons).

Yes the desktop use feels more optimised, whether that's because they've removed things like aero I'm not sure, but everything is a bit snappier. Startup & shutdown is probably a bit faster on a standard PC, much faster if you're able to use a UEFI BIOS about 10-12s - but it's not something I really bother about as I rarely turn machines off preferring to let them sleep.

But overall yes, performance is slightly better for day to day use, an incremental upgrade in that respect.

Don't bother closing them, they barely take up any resources when not active, and will open faster if they're in the background. Get used to using the Start to get back to the Start Screen and just let Windows manage the apps/memory management.

Not sure what you're trying to do with the second gesture?

Say you want to run X program as admin (CMD for example)
To highlight it on desktop, you just right click (Bringing up the mini menu)

To get the same effect on the tablet you need to put your finger on it for a little while and then move down to bring up that menu.

So you directly upgraded from the RP?? Did it ask for a serial number??

Two different types of upgrade here :o

First is around the license which won't need to validate a previous version, but will allow you to upgrade an existing installation. All the versions you can currently get are full licenses.

If you buy the upgrade license it will still allow you to upgrade an installation, but you'll also have to have a qualifying OS installed or possibly provide it with a key. I don't think there's anyway to test this until it's officially released next week.

As standard Windows 8 installation always asks for a key during install as that defines whether Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro is installed - also it will automatically activate.

Ahhh right - was thinking in Metro itself :) I didn't know it worked like that on desktop - thanks, does sound a bit alien - will find out next week :)

By desktop I meant desktop PC.
It's in Metro/New Start that the issue is.

In metro, you right click something, you get options, to get the same options on the tablet you have to press on it a bit and move down (Seems really weird)

Gotcha :) Still agree seems a bit weird, but not had chance to try it on a tablet/touch screen yet.

That's not my experience. I've got RP running on a tablet and all you do is hold your finger down until a square appears and then release you finger. This is 'right click' and the way you access context menus etc.

edit - serves me right for not refreshing.

Yeah, it's like a small downward swipe on the tile. If you exaggerate the swipe and keep the pressure on that pulls the tile away to be moved around and reorganised.

Yeah, I think it's a bit gimped to be honest, compared to as you explain normal right clicking in desktop doesn't seem as strange.

It was a deliberate design choice because it's much faster than pausing for the menu bar to appear. It really works fine even on my crappy tablet so perhaps you have a driver issue? (I'm not familiar with that tablet)

Holding your finger down in Metro apps to get context options (copy highlighted text for example) still works like it does on the desktop.

Thanks. I just want to find out what the upgrade can be used with. I have an old XP OEM license, on a old desktop, which I want to use to upgrade a PC with(XP is not installed anymore).

I did, but its not strictly an upgrade it's more of a migration since no software is saved. But yes I went from Release Preview to RTM and it asked me for my product key before installation.

Thanks.

What serial did it ask you for?? Was your Windows 8 disc or download an upgrade or the full version?? If it was an upgrade what serial did you use??

On MSDN, are people downloading the Standard Windows 8 Disc, then using a key to get PRO?
