Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

It doesnt mention that is the upgrade version...

no where that I can see does it say upgrade or in the requirements that you have 7 etc installed?

WMC is a separate licence, but will be a free upgrade during the promotional period up until the end of January.

The link is to Windows 8 Pro upgrade. Technically there is no such thing as OEM now, it is a System Builder License, and that will not be a download, nor will it be £24.99/£49.99

Good old Microsoft, makes even just normal and pro versions confusing. What the heck is Windows 8 Pro pack and how is it any different from Windows 8 Pro?
 
Microsoft should release one full version Windows 8 Pro (no other editions) will be very straight forward (with option upgrade and clean installation with WMC pack inside) would be better and avoid any confusing.

MS won't be confused ;) Everyone else perhaps.

But Windows 8 RT is simply Windows RT and is only available on devices, so shouldn't be confusing you as far as upgrades are concerned.

There isn't a Windows 8 Core product.

You've missed off Windows 8 Enterprise.

But it's simpler than Windows 7. In essence you have 2 products for consumers on x86 PCs, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. If you want WMC you need to be on Pro, hence the Pro Pack.
 
I thought even if you did the £24.99/£49.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade, Media Centre was still an extra fee on top of that? :confused:

So ANY version of Pro is able to play DVDs out of the (virtual) box?
 
Nope Nismo, you're right you need WMC as well and this will give you the codecs for DVD playback - but this will be free until the end of Jan. and you can do this through the "Add Features" in Windows 8.

Edit: To avoid confusion after rereading my post above. WMC only works on Pro. So for Windows 8 you need to upgrade to Pro to be able to add-in WMC. You can't just add WMC to Windows 8.

Edit: And I think the Windows 8 Pro Pack description requirements are unclear. I'm certain, based on previous info from MS, that the Pro Pack is intended to upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro with WMC and not Pro to Pro with WMC as it mentions. I certainly wouldn't be paying £49.99 to upgrade Pro to Pro with WMC. When they will make it available for £24.99 (Pro Upgrade + free WMC) during the promotional period.

Surely we can find free of charge third party DVD playback for windows 8 ? I think it had to be VLC player ? Cos I heard WMC add on will be cost of £49.99 - so sod it.

FFS do you read anything posted?

Buy Windows 8 Pro upgrade and you will be able to add-in WMC for free during the promotional period (up to end of Jan).

I.e. Windows 8 Pro with WMC = £24.99
