Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

Sorry but why would you want to use WMC anyway. I don't think I have once used Windows Media Centre to play any DVD or media of any kind of that matter. Surely we can like said install something along the lines of VLC player and be fine?

That's why they've removed it, small %age of users use it and MS were paying a license fee on the codecs on every copy of Windows sold.

You can install VLC or something similar if you want, but some people genuinely do use WMC and it's good to have the option.

It seems to be going well

Microsoft on Thursday reported that sales from its Windows division plunged 33% in the most recent quarter, but the news wasn't all bad for the software maker. Pre-sales of Windows 8 came in at almost $800 million, 40% higher than comparable pre-sales for the successful Windows 7 OS.

Revenues from Microsoft's Windows group fell 33% from the previous year, to $3.24 billion. But Koefoed noted that the results do not include pre-sales of Windows 8 and sales of Windows 7 PCs that are eligible for a $15 upgrade to Windows 8. The former accounted for $783 million in deferred revenue, while the latter resulted in deferred revenue of $384 million.

I like using it for my digital tv tuner(USB) so I can watch tv on my monitor while doing other things,it also saves me loading the DTV third party software since for WMC you only need to have the drivers installed to set it up,WMC has its uses.

I use WMC for everything, TV - SkyHD (6 tuners), Music, Videos, DVDs, BluRays - don't use any other boxes - just the HTPC, AV Receiver and TV.

I'll be holding off putting Windows 8 on it though until I know everything is fully working!

Hi Embalse, there's no such thing. System Builder is the new OEM, so is the full version for new machines or machines that don't have a previous qualifying OS. It either comes preinstalled or available from retailers i.e. £109.99 from OCUK.

Thanks for the clarification.
It was confusing me as the only Windows Upgrade Offer I could find on microsoft's website was for £14.99.

The £14.99 is if you've recently bought a Windows 7 PC (since June or July) then you can get a cheap upgrade to 8.

Otherwise if you already have Windows XP, Vista or 7, the online £24.99 upgrade is going to be the cheapest option but won't go live until 26/10.

OK, £24.99 it is. Until the 26th then.

That cheap Windows 8 upgrade for XP... Can you do a fresh install using it or does XP still have to be on the drive?

Just that I have a valid XP licence with my notebook but XP is not currently installed.

Read back through the thread - it's already been asked a couple of times.

I'm feeling mildly charitable so I'll still answer the question : Windows 8 is the same as Windows 7 - requires the qualifying OS to be already installed on the PC. You can still format the drive if you want a clean install. It will install without a qualifying OS installed, but will refuse to activate with the key supplied.

I won't be upgrading straight away but will check to see how it progresses. Tried again this weekend to get into it and can see with SP1 it will include a lot of UI fixes so may wait until then.

The underlying Windows 8 core desktop parts are great though and I like the new features here and there. The modern UI doesn't make sense with a keyboard though.

The main thing is driver support for me. Will need to wait a few months for the finger print reader, webcam and graphics on my Lenovo laptop to catch up. They don't work under windows 8 which is Lenovo being slack! The drivers are still in beta.

I also found the FPS in games is lower for me in 8 than 7 which means waiting for drivers to catch up there too. I reckon in 3-6 months ill check it out again.

Reading the last posting, I think a lot of people will buy the £25 download and sit on it for a few weeks, or maybe play with it on a second hard drive. Lots of things to be clarified.
