Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

But now you have a desktop with no start button, so you need to go to the metro part to initiate a task you want, also in the metro you have the tiles taking up a large amount of space that would usually only require a icon in the first place, it just seems to be a mash up to me and there is no need for it, tbh I think 8 is just for MS to milk people of money for ''Apps''.

I can list a lot more apps in the default Metro screen than I could with the start menu before with its crummy little area in the bottom left. I'll admit it would be sweet if I could resize those icons to whatever size I want them & not only the options Microsoft give you, Kinda like resizing one of your desktop applications.

For example to get it how I'd want it now I'd have to create folders within "all programs" to achieve what I have done there, Which involves even more clicks! or I'd have to have loads of icons all over my desktop screen which I don't want. Plus I'd have to press the start menu to get to those items on windows xp/vista/7 anyway.

Start button is there it is next to the Chrome icon its just transparent instead of a visual icon. Admittedly as I have said it would have been nice to have a visible button but it isn't a biggy once you are used to it.

There is more to Windows 8 than just Metro & Milk people for money with "Apps" as I have already said I have no intention of using the "App Store"

One being the improved transfer manager, Multiple screens with icons that follow the taskbar to whatever screen they are on. No need to install 3rd party software for that. Ribbon in explorer is also great!

Only real thing that bugs me is the restart/shut down menu being hidden & theres a work around for that which Glaucus has already posted.

This is just personal taste but I think my desktop looks easier on the eye than yours :p

hmm, nah, still prefer mine lol:), but I think I see what you mean with multi screens it could be nice and actually the way to go if using 8 on a desktop, add in one of them start buttons and it would be workable I think.

Is it possible to set your desktop on lets say the left screen and have Metro on the right screen and just be able to mouse between the two screens?

Or even have metro on a touch screen to the right of a normal screen?

So you have 35 items there and it takes nearly all your screen, you have room for about another 23 items, looks neat enough, but just not enough room really.

How does that nearly take all his screen? He's got enough room for another 25 icons! This is ignoring that there's a setting that lets you reduce the margins on the Start screen to fit in more tiles.

Here is my windows 7 desktop with 48 items plus a start button that hides a plethora of other stuff and I also have an hidden amount of icons in the notification area of my task bar.:) and plenty of nice desktop space for wallpaper of beautiful ladies:D

You do realise Windows 8 still has the desktop right? You can keep using it in exactly the same way you do now, although personally I think it's hideous to clutter your desktop with all those short cuts behind the programs you're running I suppose if you needed to run a massive amount it could make sense...

That's how I've mine setup, only recycle bin on desktop so it looks neat, programs I need in the taskbar left and right side like yours and games etc listed in Start menu ,looks neat and I've access to all I need and very quickly.

Not liking the look of 8, I like my desktop easy on the eyes

Your desktop is an eyesore, in no universe is your desktop arrangement "easy on the eyes" (excluding the bird in the picture).

His Windows 8 screen is much more atheistically pleasing.

Had no problems with any of the games I have installed on the Consumer Preview, All my games are listed within metro in the order I have set them out, I also have another list within Steam I don't see what is so hard about that.

My desktop still functions just like it used to but now its much quicker to get to everything I want, Especially now all the tiles are how I want them. I can't see me using any of the metro apps personally, But we shall see!

I put the consumer preview on my nieces laptop (she's 10) because the recovery partition screwed up, I said to her "This is Windows 8 enjoy!" I haven't had one question about how to do anything yet & she has certainly found her way around it just fine, Infact she has shown me a couple of tricks since!

I have used Windows since 3.1 & I didn't like the new interface at first, But now I am used to it I don't even use a shell no more, I agree it could be improved to show where the area is to enter the fullscreen start menu but it isn't a biggy. I rarely see the metro interface when I am on my desktop.

I will say one thing that another poster has mentioned already, Windows 8 is much better with multiple monitors.

How mine looks:

What do you mean your Alt+tab is infected? I don't see metro at all when I alt+tab on the desktop...
did you do an upgrade or keep your settings files etc from windows 7 ?

You can have the start screen open on one monitor but as soon as you click off it then it'll disappear so your back on the desktop.

Clean install completely, I will be doing it again this Friday when I receive my full copy.

But if you have an actual app open that will stay open even when you go do something else on the desktop. WIN+PGUP, WIN+PGDN moves the app from monitor to monitor if needed.

Would be nice to have the option for a sticky Start Screen for multiple monitors - and can see updates to live tiles etc.

also in the metro you have the tiles taking up a large amount of space

Tiles which can be used to deliver information rather than remain static.

Probably not going to be used much at first but i can see them becoming more utilised as the OS develops.

I use my desktop as a real desktop most of the time. New documents i'm working on and regularly used programs are placed there but i like to keep it tidy.

Not liking the look of 8, I like my desktop easy on the eyes

Sorry, you may not like the look of Windows 8, but for me your setup is far worse.

I have room for 84 icons on the Start Screen, only about 40 are in use and these are exclusively Metro apps - no legacy shortcuts.

I have no desktop icons, even my Recycle Bin is on the Taskbar. I have my main programs, about 20 on the taskbar. The rest of the stuff I don't use very often I either Search for (as I did in Vista or Win7, or access via the All apps in Start Screen).

Where MS could have thrown us a bone for the desktop is improving the taskbar pinned icons - give us the ability to create groups directly on the taskbar, i.e. have a single icon on the taskbar for games and then be able to pin the different shortcuts to that single icon). For this particular problem I use Steam with shortcuts to non-steam games, then Pin these to the Steam pinned item - so all games are available from my Steam taskbar icon.

It would be nice to do this for other application types natively though.

But if you have an actual app open that will stay open even when you go do something else on the desktop. WIN+PGUP, WIN+PGDN moves the app from monitor to monitor if needed.

Yep sticky start screen is really needed. We should all give feed back to Ms and demand sticky start screen.

I maybe should have called it something else, like persistent. Hate to think what the work around might be for a sticky start screen

Really cannot get the hang of this on a 3 screen setup, it's just so frustrating to use.

Want to give a bit more detail? I'm on 4 screens and it's working okayish. The hotspot corners work on every screen independently. If you open the Start Screen with a mouse it opens on the screen you do it on. If you use the Winkey it opens the Start Screen on the last monitor you opened it on.

The only reason for saying okayish is that the hotspot detection points are difficult to hit accurately if it's say the middle monitor. Often I get the Start Screen icon on the middle screen, and at the same time the Charm on the left hand screen!

It'd be much nicer if there was some option to snap to or change the detection areas when you can't just chuck your mouse into a corner.

Ah, so dual screen setups are not really working out too great at the minute, sounds a little confusing, could be good if metro was on one screen and a normal desktop area on the other, but if that is not the case then well, as you say guys above it could do with MS doing something about it.
