October 23rd Media Event

Oh dear. It's an android tablet for me. No way am I shelling out £269 for the iPad mini. I'm quite disappointed.

Maybe at initial release it was, both Nexus and Kindle devices have been operating at a decent profit margin for a considerable time now.

In July the Kindle Fire was estimated to have a per unit production cost of $139. That will only have reduced since then too.

Have they, where's your proof?

Even at $140 that's just the production cost, you still have all of your costs on top of that from the original development all the way to delivery to the customer. And if they were retailing for less than the original production cost for a long time then.... July is what, 8 months after it came out? And there's now the updated Fire and Fire HD models.

Shame about the price of the new iPad Mini. If it had a retina display I might be tempted by the 16GB model, but with it's current display I'd expect it to be a bit nearer the competition in terms of price. Plus, you know this time next year they'll release an iPad Mini 2 with a retina display.

It's hard for Apple to be innovative because technology has come so far and there's only so much they could put in their products to make them better, but at the same time the tiny revisions are starting to annoy me a bit. I'd rather they slowed the cycle down but made more significant changes to each product than just bring out a slightly improved product each year.

There maybe only so much that they can do to make them better, but they could reduce the prices! The iPad Mini prices are ridiculous IMHO.

Bought an Ipad 3 two weeks ago as it was fairly new out so expected 12 months out of it and it's outdated already.

Called up Apple Aus, one guy had a clue, but said we had to contact who we bought it from, closest Apple store is Sydney so obviously we didn't get it from there. Went into local retailer, who were clueless, phoned Apple back and got someone else totally clueless on the phone.

The new one isn't out here until the 2nd of November, they had better take ours back and not be funny about it, we got it on the 9th of October.

I would imagine having set a precedent in the States that they can't afford not to follow suit in all the other countries now or face the backlash.

I also got an Iphone 5 to use for work, can't say I am overly impressed with that, new connector, no streetview and crap maps, and you can't even tune it into the radio, my cheap 20 quid Samsung tough phone I had in my old job would do that!

The phone signal can be patchy and I don't want to incure huge data costs on my company phone or I would listen to streamed music.

:( was planning to get two of these if they where sub 230 but at 270 just two much.

It's almost into decent android 10" tablets range

I need to find out if the flap at the back for the RAM upgrade is still there.

I am not paying Apple my left arm for doubling the ram.

im sure you'll get the 27" Raymond, this does have user upgradeable ram.

The 21.5" on the other hand doesnt, im glad i went ahead an bought myself a 2011 model for this reason.

the only thing about the new model i like is the USB 3.0 slots.

im hoping someone decides that a thunderbolt to usb cable is worth it. it would sell like hot cakes.

the footprint on both 2011 & 2012 machines seems exactly the same.

in regards to the ipad mini, im all for it and it seems about the price i expected it to be. when has apple ever tried to do low pricing to beat the competition??

apple the brand sells the items, great customer service and high quality and well made items.

no its not retina resolution but really, in a screen of that size is it really needed? for everyday stuff which im assuming this is aimed at you would notice the difference.

I don't understand the retina not needed at this size comments. Try comparing an iPhone 3GS screen to that of an iPhone 4/4S/5 the difference is substantial.

here is the reseller return policy for the us, i would assume au would be the same and 14 days would be the cutoff.

For anyone that missed the presentation here is a summary of the event:

"Cool", "lighter", "amazing", "best ever", "cool", "awesome", "even lighter". Apple have done it again.

Because it means when the Mini comes out, everything that's ever come out for iPad will be completely compatible with it from the start. It's a logical move for them... plus it means when they upgrade it next time round 1st gen buyers will have more of a reason to upgrade.

I think there is some truth in this. Developers don't want a third version to have to develop for. By keeping the same resolution as iPad 1 and iPad 2 all the apps will just work and still look perfect. This is part of the problem with android apps - so many devices with different resolutions makes it a pain to develop develop for.

In all honesty I still quite happily use the iPad 1 if someone else is using the 3, and I don't think "ugh, this looks too blurry".

I think when they do switch to retina it will be when they can get the same resolution as ipad3
