I you are going to be running, you are better off getting your Gait analysed at a proper running shop and buying shoes that are appropriate for your running style. In running footwear is everything.

Panorama/Dispatches did a programme about that and the accepted science is thar it's nonsense.

Perhaps for 99% of the population. However, if you are a serious athelite training at the upper level, and suffer from pronation/suprination or similar gait issues, the type of footware is very important to counter and protect the arch shape. Otherwise, you risk ending up with plantar facitus (or similar!)

Goodness. I'm only lumbering round the woods for 20 minutes at a time, I think I will be OK with the risks involved for now.

The internet is a wonderful thing but it's also very easy to read too much and convince yourself you need special everything for any sport imo.

Exactly - nobody is going to start running in a £100+ pair of trainers incase they don't like it. I did the same thing - I bought a cheap £35 pair of Nikes that have been great (though I have injured myself by pushing too hard) and now I know I want to stick at it, will likely get a proper pair for Christmas.
