Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

But isn't Hotmail / Outlook POP3? According to Thunderbird it is so Windows 8 Mail must support POP3 to some extent.

Mind you, IMAP is far superior as it allows the computer and the phone to both get the mail.

Odd, but you are right. But yet it doesn't act like normall pop3 does.
However googling MS have said imap coming soon.

I suppose MS have acces to the app and as such built in to the auto selection for outlook, but isn't available to others.

Pretty shoddy, not to include imap from the get go.

Outlook.com/Hotmail is connecting through Exchange ActiveSync.

It gives you the option to add a Pop3 through other mailbox types, but then as soon as it's selected tells you "Mail doesn't support POP3 email accounts. Too add this account to Mail, ask your email provider about using IMAP or EAS".

You upgraded to Windows 8, but didn't have a previous version of Windows installed (error 0xC004F061)

If you see error 0xC004F061 when you try to activate Windows 8, it means that you're using a product key for an upgrade version of Windows 8 and a previous version of Windows wasn't on your PC when Windows 8 was installed. To install an upgrade version of Windows 8, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC.
If you formatted the drive before the upgrade version of Windows 8 was installed, you won't be able to use your upgrade product key to activate Windows 8. To activate Windows 8, you'll need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 8. For help with the activation process, contact support.

After reading the above it sounds like you cannot do a clean install of Windows 8 upgrade

Not so sure. Seems to put to rest that ou do need windows the machine. However I don't they've removed the clean install option rom the instal menu.
So could still format when your installing it.

Especially as it mentions formatting before you upgrade.

Ahh well, I expect we'll get far more info in a few hours.

Some answers from Microsoft in the Q&A here: http://betanews.com/2012/07/04/four-things-you-really-need-to-know-about-windows-8-upgrades/

The answer to question 2 confirms that you can do a clean install using the upgrade version. The only requirement is that at the start of the upgrade process there is a partition with a previous version of Windows on it (and it is valid).

glad I read this page.. so Win 8 Pro the one to go for from Win 7 in majority of cases.
But looks like its just an upgrade as in can't do a clean install with a 24.99 Win 8 Pro (ok just read post above, sounds a bit of a game, having a partiton with prev windows!!)
When is it available to download? And is there an announcement later??

Available from midnight. So that'll be like 5am depending what midnight that is.
Keynote being live streamed in a few hours, see win8 launch party thread a few posts down.

By the looks of it you can still do a clean install from within the setup

thats great -thanks for heads up on news later Glaucus

you can clean install once windows 8 has been installed.

Its in the advanced settings to remove everything and just revert back to a full windows install.

About time too. People have been waiting for MS to do that for years. Funny how it works like IMAP if you use Windows Live Mail, but if you use any other client, you have a POP3 setup.

Stoppit MS, just stoppit! :)

Ok thats good news about the install business, I did read somewhere about the refresh/reset re-install option on Win 8..
Looking forward to the keynote speech later

Some one else clarified, outlook uses EAS and other email providers can also use EAS if they wish.

You can upgrade your license and upgrade your install (apps/documents etc)

Or you can upgrade your license and clean install Windows 8 as part of the process. Some people like to start fresh, though the upgrade is pretty good in Win8.

If you have problems down the line you can either do a refresh or reset (clean install) from Windows 8 as well.
