Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

As in my earlier post; you need to buy a dvd to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit
Edit:
Download only upgrades what you are running, Like for Like; 32-bit or 64-bit

It asks you to download upgrade assistant; then it upgrades what you are running, x86 or x64

Edit: reply to banger9365

From Q&A Can I upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit

Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8, but you'll need to buy Windows 8 as a DVD.

You also won't be able to keep any files, settings, or apps when you upgrade from a 32-bit to a 64-bit version.

Am sure some people in this thread have been upgrading from release preview though.

Bit sucky its an extra ~£13 (in serial email you can order it) wonder if you can use someone else's 64 install and then change serial key from within windows?

That does suck, they've not made it easy considering how they wine about people staying on old versions and that the iso's were choosable with release preview etc.

Could really do with an install thread, all though I'm about to go to bed in a min. Need to condense this data and walk through error codes etc as they come up.

I've just passed it again after seeing if I could repair it, no such luck.
It actually goes into windows boot manager, and and it's like OxOOOO something
Gives the usual about software or hardware changes have stopped it working but I can't under mstand how, I was sitting there using it all fine and dandy.

With out error code you can't trace the problem. Are you overclocked? That's quite a common issue with installs? Could try removing the clock till its up and running.

I take it you didn't remove any hard drives after installing win7? As that could mess up boot record.

I wonder if w7 wasn't activated prior to upgrading

If i get upgrade version will i still need to disconnect hard drive if im running SSD as main?

I didn't and it put the boot files where they should be.

What's everyone getting for their WEI, I get the following

If you're on release preview 64bit does the upgrade assistant allow you to download w8 pro upgrade 64bit and then use it to upgrade xp 32bit?

I don't know if this as been posted

Hello, In Windows 7 - we turned off defrag for SSDs as you mention in your entry; but in Windows 8, we have changed the defrag tool to do a general optimization tool that handles different kinds of storage, and in the case of SSD's it will send 'trim' hints for the entire volume;
SSDs are storage devices made of flash memory; flash memory unlike hard disks are block erasable devices - they can be written to at a byte level but need to erased at a block level; Trim is a storage level hint that was introduced in the Windows 7 days to indicate that Windows is not using certain regions of the storage device; NTFS will send these trim hints when files are deleted or moved from those regions; SSDs consume these hints to perform a cleanup in the background called as 'reclaim' that helps them get ready for next writes. The SSD may choose to perform the optimization immediately, store the information for later optimization or throw away the hint completely and not use it for optimization since it does not have time to perform this optimization immediately.
In Windows 8, when the Storage Optimizer (the new defrag tool) detects that the volume is mounted on an SSD - it sends a complete set of trim hints for the entire volume again - this is done at idle time and helps to allow for SSDs that were unable to cleanup earlier - a chance to react to these hints and cleanup and optimizer for the best performance. We do not do a traditional defrag (moving files to optimizer there location for space and performance) on SSDs.
Thank you for your question and I hope this clarifies the need to run the Storage Optimizer on a regular basis.

I've tried it, works great

Reading the last few pages, everything about this launch sounds a complete headache. Or.... it's between different peoples experiences. At least with Apple it's one OS, no confusion and it's all 64bit. No 32bit version only, oh and you have to buy the disc for 64bit. No N version or another version.

Microsoft still does my head in. They make things difficult when it does not need to be.

It was so simple back in the XP days, Home or Pro versions. 32bit or 64bit or both supplied. The end. None of this, oh sorry 32bit is download only.

Why can't they have an all in one download and specific keys triggers the version you bought.

When using windows upgrade assistant for upgrade win 8 pro, after the download I will have an ISO for burinig to media yes ? or will the assistant try and do it's own thing.

I did read before using and it said yes but just checking!

Thanks jamei.
