Can any cable braiders help please?

Just having a side thought, but if I decided on para-cord what sizes would I need for flat SATA cables?

And also, as per my question above, does anyone have any resources on how to braid SATA POWER cables? Or any info to share?

Thanks :)

Im quite sure you cant take them apart but have to braid them as one unit.

6mm braid And get some 3:1 - 4:1 heatshrink.

think this will do you for the sata cables, just have to stretch the braid over and same for heatshrink.

ps..got the card reader and plate friday, will try to get them installed soon, daughter has just had her tonsil and adenoids out so my time is spent with her.

The sata cables come apart, theres a cover on the back that unclips and the cables just pull out.
Be sure to put them back the right way though!

The sata power cables are easy, but delicate.

Similar to fan connectors theres a little plastic flap kinda thing holding the wires in, use a small pin and lift this flap of plastic up slightly and the wire just pulls out. It will have 4 (i think) connectors on the end of it so be carefull you dont bend them. I personally taped them with clear sticky tape so i didnt catch them on the braiding.

Try this image (not a great one tbh), ive tried to highlight the little plastic flaps...

Thanks CS,

I guess it'll be a little trial and error?

So it's easy to get to the wires, and braid them just a little delicate in some areas, if I take my time I should get something half reasonable :)

I know where to get the right de-pinning tool for the molex cable (same one that Nils sells but for cheaper).

Watch 'Lutr0 customs' guides on YT and you'll know everything there is to sleeving :) or PM me as well :)

Thanks for all the info lads, after watching the LutroO vids on youtube I'm good to go (have ordered his custom sleeving tool too), and I've just put an order in to Nils so hopefully it won't be too long now (I went for the black and B-Magic) :D

initially I found it quite difficult. I had a wee play the other night and broke the tool :-(

My hand slipped and twisted the pin off. Ordered another from OCUK and although pricey is made of stainless steel so its much tougher. Got on great guns with it.

Just make sure your going down the outside of the connector sounds obvious but its quite small and sometimes you think your there untill you realise only ones down the outside and one in the middle.

I have done a double 8 pin pci express cable, took about 3 hours.

Thanks cammy, and for the heads up on the OCUK tools, never realised they sold them :)

How long did it take for your 'Nils' package to arrive?

In total i used about 20m of braiding (think this was 2 mm), maybe slightly more as you have to allow for the odd sleve that you totally screw up.

I used slightly over 5 m of the small diameter heat shrink.(think this was 3 mm). OFcourse it depends on the ammount of heatshrink you use at each end of cable. I sat for about an hour and cut up a bag of 1CM strips in all my various sizes.

You've confirmed what I feared I think :(

I only saw the advise on MDPC after my order shipped that said he recommends 1mtr of shrink per 10mtrs of sleeve (and I'm not even sure that takes into account any you may mess up!)

I think I'll put in another order for more shrink, thanks for the info :)

I'll be using 15mm shrinks, and I have more than 20mtrs to sleeve.

I counted the number of wires, then doubled it and then added some extra for mistakes, and that's what I based my order on but it seems not enough?

I thought I had enough with 20m of vanilla 10m of copper and 10m of black
I have done 2 x 8 pin pci express cables plus 2 8 pin extensions and about 80% of the 24 pin mobo cable
I'm now out of vanilla and running low on the other 2. Thought I'd have plenty

Space monkey before you order any more shrink, maybe you should watch Lutro customs video on shrinkless sleeving. So buying some generic shrink from maplins etc or a cheaper electronics store and go for that look.

Thanks mate, I've been watching his vids on youtube and I may do that if I need to but I quite like the look of the heatshrinked cables :)

If you are looking to put in another order let me know and we could share postage?
