Around 12 years on this forums now..

Isn't it about time we reintroduced the OCC?! I think I now qualify as a member of that illustrious club :p

And the no hot linking rule is just ridiculous, basically everytime I want to post a picture now I have to download it to my hard drive, then upload it to imageshack (or similar) thus cluttering up the web with duplicate data that needn't be there. I don't understand the reasons behind it either, why do OCUK give a **** about other people's bandwidth usage, they let you post Youtube vids directly so why is it OK to use theirs but not any other sites that has a picture on it (which uses a tiny amount of bandwidth compared to a video).

If you host an image, and it goes viral, and it's been linked too on loads of forums by people using up your bandwidth, that's going to annoy you, and it's likely you'll replace the image for one of the same name which is a "naughty" image, which will then use the same URL, so will appear on the forum, damaging their reputation.

If you use imageshack/photobucket/youtube/vimeo, each image or video gets a unique URL, and they don't allow you to replace it with a naughty one.

Why do I keep hearing people talk of a pr0n forum? is this some elaborate troll which i'm not understanding?

You need 10,000 posts before the dons unlock it for you. I'm nearly there so I may need regular opticians visits shortly after.

pr0n forum isn't all that, it's mainly 5UB getting involved with some blow up props...!

I cant remember how long I have been here but its well over 10 years now.

The forum was a lot more interesting in the past, I remember when Rebel, Stumpy, GSVJase, Gordy, Bod, Fruitbat, Fixxxer, Yossarian, 2blue4u posted there.

As I said earlier though you don't get around the "naughty image swap" problem by just removing the IMG tags and leaving the URL which is what an admin did to one of the last images I posted.

If the worry is that people could swap the image to something rude (which IMO is extremely unlikely for 99.9999% of images posted - my last one for example was a graph from a respected medical website) then why not just ban picture completely?

Farewell, my pleasures past,
Welcome, my present pain!
I feel my torments so increase
That life cannot remain.
Cease now, thou passing bell;
Rung is my doleful knell;
For the sound my death doth tell.
Death doth draw nigh;
There is no remedy.

I've been here since 2003 and honestly still only know the names of a very small handful of people. I just don't look at who's said what and read the forums like some omni being. :P

I was here before the "nuke" but was travelling and around the world so never signed up until 2003. And since then... well other than clocking up a ridiculous amount of posts :o so much has happened. I've met hundreds of people from here and have developed some amazing friendships. Broadband and mobile phone technology has been developed.

I've seen the forum pull together during horrific times, and mourn the loss of some wonderful people. I've seen the forum, fall apart with political rifts, and general abhorrent behaviour and trolling from some people.

Seen the demographic change, and certainly a lot younger people on here now, which isn't a bad thing and adds some new perspective to this place.

I'll be sticking around for sure, I love this place. :)

Because, sometimes when hotlinking, the image that you think you're posting isn't the same as others would see.

By going to some sites normally, you see the correct image. Your browser then caches this.But, when others see it hotlinked on the forum, they may see something else (or nothing at all)

This is very easy to set up, using tools such as from this page

Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http(s)?://(www\.)?yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule \.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif)$ http://www.naughty.url/here [NC,R,L]

I've also been here since before the nuke, my life, like many others, has changed greatly, but OcUK is still the one forum I visit and post on regularly.

Think i first signed up in 2000 when trying to build my first PC. Think i forgot the spacers for the motherboard and fried it on the side of the case lol. Many upgrades and overclocking attempts ensured. Forum wise i was very active but have since slowed down to SA occasional poster and general lurker. On a personal level i got married, had 3 kids, got divorced and been part of some awesome OcUK meets over the years. Hardly see any of the old names although Hedge and Davey have brought back some memories.

This is a great community, one or if not the best. We all have great fun while learning at the same time. It is a quick moving forum too, when you refresh there is always something new going on. :)

It's certainly a lot more pleasant than the magic forums I used to frequent (and I presume you have too?). They were a hotbed of willy-waving, petty arguments and back biting - truly horrifying places. Magic geeks are worse than computer geeks!

Been here far too long now, i was here before the big nuke and joined up around the time when mindyerbeak and a few other oldies were posting.
