Which interface do you prefer?

I use Windows 8 Pro for work, and I don't have a touchpad or touchscreen. it's just people (like the chap you linked) being anal about having something new to learn.

I don't mind being outside my comfort zone with my OS, it's pretty nifty once you get the hang of it.
 
I don't mind Metro. I can live with it as the built in ISO mounter, improved task manager and the other bells and whistles added with Windows 8 more than makes up for the learning curve associated with Metro, IMHO.
 
I would like to try it out but everytime I try to install it my mouse doesn't work, which means I can't finish the installation. :(

Benchmarks have shown in most cases for games its the same/faster, only borderlands 2 shows a performance drop (of 5fps).

Considering it's in it's first week and it has performed pretty well, so a decent launch in my opinion, it will only get better

Really you think so? I upgraded, the upgrade went well - until that is Windows decided to do an update. The update never completed, got stuck on 13% and never recovered after that, the whole install was trashed. This is the first time ever I have had such a catastrophic problem following a new Windows install and I go back to 3.1. I am now back using Windows 7 and that's how it's going to stay. All Windows 8 does for the Desktop is complicate an OS that didn't need messing with in the first place. The Metro interface for Desktops simply adds an unnecessary layer of complexity.

BTW do a search on the 13% issue and you will find lots of folk having the same problem, many on brand new hardware. It's Vista MK2. :eek:

Oh and before anyone says otherwise, I love change hence why I installed it. However, not all change is for the better and W8 for non-touch Desktops is not a step forward. Thank goodness I still have OS X.

I searched for that 13% issue & the fix was to remove the realtek audio driver or AV until it is installed. Personally not had any problems & I wouldn't say it is anything like Vista not in the slightest.

That's what I think. Paid to upgrade last night and I regret it already. OK it's new etc but it just doesn't flow.

Also, doesn't detect my Mac's wireless device when running Bootcamp - Win7 did! Rahhh!! :mad:

So on brand new hardware the user has to start removing drivers etc. seems more like a work in progress than a finished article. BTW removing said drivers hasn't worked for many? Having used 8 myself for only a few days could you perhaps explain the benefits over W7 for the static Desktop user?
 
Faustus, no I don't think so, I don't have days to spare testing a fiddling, but quite a few techie sites have done the tests/run the benchmarks and thats the outcome.

Every os has had its problems, always will, it's first week of release so a bit soon to be condemning it as vista mk2

As many people here will know, I'm not adverse to change, and I'm very pro-MS, but on a traditional keyboard and mouse setup I can't help that Metro feels "clunky". For most of what I do it's not any different as I'm working in apps, file explorer etc but I don't think it's a paradigm shift that is useful for traditional hardware. Maybe this will mean that we move to touch devices, but until then, it feels like a octagonal peg going into a circular hole - it fits but not well.

Also, it's completely useless in Server 2012. Why they put it in there god only knows.

Don't worry, once you have been using it long enough to adapt (I.E the new ways of doing things become second nature) you will wonder how you ever used a computer without it and Windows 7 will feel clunky and impractical by comparison :)

See I don't see that being the case. It's not a case of learning to do things differently, most of the time I hit the start button and type to search for the program I'm after; this is the same on 8 as it was on 7. My problem is certain common things take more clicks to get there. Standby is an extra click, getting to adapter settings for a NIC is another click etc.

Also, I've had the full version installed for about a month now...

Well I don't know cause I haven't had any problems like I say. I tried to help by giving you somewhere to start.

My PC is oldhat now compared to these new ones. Maybe its the manufacturers releasing crappy drivers.

I find the Ribbon in explorer much better than before, Dual taskbar, file transfer manager, task manager amongst a few things that are better than W7.

Some people will like it & some won't that is the way of life. But it is nothing like Vista at all.

The more I play around with the new OS the more I'm liking it. When I first saw the vids on YouTube I instantly hated it, but after risking an upgrade and seeing that the OS has already matured a little, I'm rather enjoying it, especially when you view the start screen as just that, a new visual start menu instead of a separate entity from the desktop, it all flows well imo :)

Certainly there are things that need improving, and I'm hoping MS will do this soon, but on the whole I'm rather surprised at how much I'm liking it :)

Well speaking personally I never had a problem with Vista, as for W7, that as Mac users love to say "just works" beautifully. However, the same cannot be said with W8. Why does the Windows Desktop need this additional UI? Sadly, this iteration smacks of desperation from a company in decline. I've held MS stock for years but I'm now considering selling and soon.

Oh! Come on, task manager better? Wow. How often do you have to resort to task manager? The Desktop is a tarted up W7 experience which is fine, but what use is the metro UI?

Adapt, new ways of doing things? A good well designed product should be intuitive to use end of. I could adapt to being beaten every day but it doesn't make it right. W7 was a step forward, not so W8.
 
I was very dubious of installing Win 8 but glad to report that I am we'll impressed with it. So far! Updates went fine and everything else for that matter.
