Voting Police commissioner on 15th

Thanks for the links Burnsy :)

I appreciate that police officers must be placed in a difficult position with all this... You guys are the ones that this change has the most influence over, you're the most qualified to discuss the ramifications, and yet you must hold your tongues for political purposes. Must be pretty tough...

I'm not holding my tongue for political purposes, I'm doing it for legal ones, but you're welcome.

Are the general public the best people to decide these sorts of things? Isn't this why we vote for a representative to do this on our behalf?

I've just been reading about this, saw a big advertisment in the city centre today about one candidate.

Do like the 'past expirence' of the three up for this;

I stand on my experience, understanding and the practical exposure to policing and the justice system in Britain and elsewhere as the basis of my qualification for this role. I have strong managerial ability and am already in the process of putting together a highly proficient team of advisers and experts to assist me. I know that I have the necessary insight and technical knowhow in creating an independent and progressive police force. I have been involved in training for new Police recruits and senior officers of Leicestershire Police who I know have benefited from my insight and experience.

This appointment is not about whether a candidate has previous policing experience, or indeed of local government. It is about credibility in running a complex, large organisation during a time of financial austerity - and also of having demonstrated the leadership and steel to take, explain, and then see through difficult decisions. I have done all of these.

As an Assistant Mayor for Leicester City Council I am responsible for a £32 million budget, lead on community safety, anti-social behaviour and Policing issues, chair the city Community Safety Partnership and am part of the Police Strategic Partnership Board for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. I’m proud of my track record of working with the Police and other partners to deliver real improvements for local communities to make the feel safer and reduce crime.

I'm going to vote for the independent :)

This is from the guy who is tipped as most likely to win.

I am proud to have been part of a Government that cut crime across the Humberside Police force area by 43%. We did it by introducing community policing, PCSOs, CCTV cameras and ASBOs and by being tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.

Yes... John Prescott.

why oh why would anyone consider voting for this idiot is beyond me.

I really wanted to vote independent on this, mainly because I really don't think it's a good idea for political parties to have close relationships with the police. However the only indy candidate seems to be some sort of criminal hugging hippy from what I can tell. I might actually spoil my ballot on this one.

I just had a quick read of the people running for the position in my area, so far it seems the 2 independent people who have a few ideas and trying to point out that they are independent, labour has some plans but no previous experience, conservative have experience and good ideas (pretty much same ideas as some of the others who actually listed ideas) and then there is a UKIP guy who is going "vote for me because I'm not the other guys!".

None of them ever worked in the police, they seem to be either accountants, politicians and 1 guy is a barrister. out of the 6 people going for the position only a couple focused on policing in kent, the rest only care about party politics or talking about how they want be a part of party politics.

And you seriously think that these newcomers will make the slightest difference? They have no power over the budget, so they have no real power. There's just one person, to replace the several who are currently doing the job, so it's much more likely that they will miss things. They are even more nakedly political than the current committees. And the final hole in your theory is: the Police forces are almost totally against them: unlike you they understand that this means less public control, and not more.

Yes they do, actually they get to set the budget to whatever pet project they have in mind of tackling. I remember one of them coming on TV saying that she had been sexually assaulted in the past by a random stranger so she plans to make tackling sexual assaults her first priority.

Just goes to show that electing random people with no relevant background - and taking control out of the police professional's hands - is only going to give way to those people taking care of what they think is important.

Whether it will end up being better than what we have or not is to be seen, but we'll doubtless get some outliers in this one with nutjobs becoming commissioners.

Commissioners will set priorities for the local police force, oversee its budget and hire the chief constable.

The elected commissioner will replace police authorities which are currently made up of local councillors and appointees. They will also take over from councils the budgets for Community Safety Partnerships

this is all a load of BS its just politicising the police for no good reason, which if they become anymore a tool of government oppression we might as well live in syria. The PCC's have to be invited to stand election anyway, so its basically another boys club.

In any case I cant find a single person who is going to bother voting in these elections, im guessing the turnout will be lower than 20%
I never not vote in things, but if all I see is Con, Lib, Lab on my ballot paper im spoiling it, just like in the local elections

One in my area listed "Vegetarian" in the bullet points at the top of his profile....oh dear :(.

We have a choice of two, one Labour and t'other Conservative. The Labour candidate can't even be arsed to add a comment to that website and the tory boy is not even remotely local to my area.

Mine will be going in the bin. I can barely be bothered when it comes to general elections, only choosing to do so so that I can complain about what a crap government we have, so I've little to no interest in this one.
