Windows 8 The Verdicts ?

Forgot all about this, I got the £15 offer ages ago, downloading as we speak on the main PC. I choose the option to keep nothing as all my files etc are on a external drive and I would rather setup all new settings for the os anyway. So when installing will it get rid of all the old win 7 stuff or would it be a better option to format, install win 7 and then do the upgrade?

Cheers guys/gals

If you format, you may aswell just install win8 straight from the DVD/USB that you make, skipping installation of Windows 7.

It won't get rid of all the old stuff, but should stick win7 into a windows.old directory which you can freely delete or keep yourself anyway, whichever you decide.

So im thinking about upgrading to Win8 (getting the fresh install CD from ocuk)

can anyone let me know the following?

3rd Party Drivers from:
Nvidia/ATI
ASUS (Soundcards)
Razer

are they decent enough to use properly yet? for a gamer
:D

razer mouse worked out of the bag Suprisingly my internet did too.

Nvidia drivers are fine

Asus Xonar d2x has beta drivers which work fine so I figure others will do

Just waiting for USB 3 drivers for my z68 extreme Gene-z the native drivers seem to be limiting my write speed with usb 3 but that's nothing major

Upgraded today from a very old installation of windows 7 (old as in was installed upon release day).
Initial thoughts - upgrade process was painless (if rather long!) - retained all my games/applications and thus far everything works just fine.
Not entirely convinced with the new interface - find it a bit weird that it is just an overlay rather than replacement of the traditional desktop. Kind of think MS should have ditched the old desktop and gone the whole hog but i guess too many people would freak out.
Nice to not have to bother worrying about drivers and such like but one concern is where is MS security essentials? had to uninstall that before the upgrade would begin but doesnt seem to be there in its windows 8 incarnation.

still so far so good. just need to understand how the music thing works as i cant seem to see my music collection with it

Win8 has AV built in so no need for MSE,http://www.pcworld.com/article/259876/antivirus_on_windows_8_looking_at_your_options.html

Thanks m8 I never knew you could do that, I thought the deal was just for a cheap way of getting win 8, ie you could only use it to upgrade win 7. I never knew you could make an ISO and install as per normal. Installed and loving it so far, lots to learn though.

Ok just found out gadgets have been removed, what do you guys use to monitor your cores speed and temp now they are removed?

Core Temp & MSI Afterburner for the GFX

Never knew this. I have avast installed how good is Windows Defender tho at catching virus?

Defender is a repackaged (and improved, hopefully) Microsoft Security Essentials. It always did pretty well in tests. My family has been using for quite a long time and not caught any viruses,

Hi

Upgraded (clean install really) over weekend & apart from a glitch (caused by me) which meant a BIOS reset & loosing my O/C settings things went fairly smoothly.
Decided to go straight for Start8 to make things easier to get used to & tend to spend most of my time on the desktop. I never was a geeky smartphone type and still use an old Motorola pre 3 network mobile so the tiles are not really my style though they don't get in my way either.
Overall seams slightly smoother ride & maybe a bit nippier but that could be the clean install & placebo effect. My conclusion is that with Start8 for the non tiles fans it's neither a step forward nor a step back , just a side step with somethings better & some things worse. Most things work OK though some software needs newer versions (and can cost lots of £'s) & some work fine. Similarly older games may not work at all & some require patching but haven't tested any yet to see any real time effect on FPS.

Thats my take on Win8 so far , sure I will get frustrated with something at some stage & have a smile at other things ... tis OK Microsoft but could do better

Back on Windows 7 and relished the time since I returned.

Closing thoughts on Windows 8. "Is this really it? Is this the THING. Where is the desktop version?"

With that said, when I did go back, I had cleared up all of the initial issues I had apart from not being able to run FIFA too well thanks to poor nvidia drivers.

That isn't Windows 8 fault mind.

Not bad for the price they charge, bargain considering a game costs more. But the price reflects on it's use.

Removed or should say upgraded three PCs from 7 to 8,working great and desktop is so easy to find and also simple to get it like Win7 if you want, installed about 15 games so far,no issues with any of them, very polished etc..I did notice Intel had a new LAN driver out for my Asus Z68 V Gen3 board so installed that via their online download driver check software,no issues with that :) .

Still installing more games so getting there slowly .

Very happy with Win8 even as a desktop user and gamer :) .

Been playing with Windows 8 on my old Dell XPS m1530 over the weekend and must say overall I'm quite impressed although there are a number of little niggles but I'm sure most can be worked out with updates or alternative apps. Not sure about moving my desktop PC over yet, will need to play a bit more before I take the leap...

No Start menu really freaked me out in the desktop at first, quickly adjusted and tend to alt tab my way around between Metro and the desktop. I can understand why some find it quite jarring as very different look and feel to 7. I think on a touch screen laptop or tablet Windows 8 has a great deal going for it but on older hardware which doesn't support gestures on the trackpad can make navigation a bit of a pain in places.

I find the new Start screen to be a likable hub and think the live tiles are handy, I look forward to seeing more being made of these. Would be great if we could easily create and customise our own.

It would be nice to have more options and customisation generally, for example the photo app shows big previews and there is lots of left to right scrolling, would be nice to be able to view as thumbnails or somewhere in between but seems pretty locked down and seems to be a theme. I can understand when on a tablet but more options for power users on desktops/laptops would make more sense to me.

IE10 in Metro is hideous in my opinion, why they thought sticking the URL bar at the bottom would be a good idea is beyond me, totally counter-intuitive to all other browsers and seems to be a change for change-sake. There were a load of other things I hated about it but can't recall off the top of my head.

I don't seem to be able to snap anything to the side either, tried all manner of apps and I can drag them all but just bounce back to full screen, even tried registry fixes but still no joy.

The Store needs work, need to be able to sort and filter by creator, if I want to see everything official by Microsoft or whoever it shouldn't be that difficult. True I can search for Microsoft and mostly the first results are all MS ones but load of junk mixed in too. The upgrade process to get Media Centre for free was a ball-ache and again more complicated than it should be.

I like many others was thrown when needing to shut down, now it only took we a few seconds to think to alt and F4 or ctrl, alt and delete but why wouldn't you include a simple button in an obvious place? I know it's in charms now but should be always on the desktop I think. There are now third party fixes for this but my Mum wouldn't have had a clue what to do and could lead to a lot of frustration for novice users and seems like a ridiculous oversight.

It's a big change for MS and am quite impressed, can't fault the speed as my old laptop has never felt so responsive and considering the age of the hardware needs to be applauded. I do think there is a lot of room for improvement but the same is true for any new system, as I said I'll hold back using on my desktop until I'm a bit surer how all my games and applications will work. I do think for tablets this is a real winner though, just need to play with the phone now as def. considering a change from Android.

Kranix,
It is easy to search the store. Once in the store go to the charms and chose 'search'. the same works in any of the apps.

I get that matey but I'd like to filter all apps created by Google, Microsoft etc. If you just search Microsoft then you get a ton of other junk somewhat related and I like to stick to apps I can trust, just seemed odd that there isn't a 'more by this developer' option when looking at a specific app.

Not a deal-breaker for me it's the little annoyances that can add up.
