None here and none on the two msi 7970 oc my friend bought either. Maybe it does make a difference.

Yep though that's probably just marketing
Update on motherboard, saying it was tested before sending and that it sounds like a short?? Would have thought a short would just stop the system from showing any life signs.
They have no clueIt could have been many things and if it was a short, it was/is something shorting on the board.
I'll run the board on a sheet of card tonight and see what happens.
If I can get the same debug code with the known working 8500gt out of the case then the board's 100% screwed.

No coil whine here![]()
No idea mate, all i know is this...
That's a reference, but slightly revised. There's actually a 2nd reference pcb that AIB's can use and that one is typically used with different caps. That MSI pictured is the same as the Powercolor. The problem with this pcb is that there is a capacitor that sits higher than the true reference pcb, so it caused clearance issues with early EK waterblocks. EK has since adjusted their blocks to compensate for the issue so it's moot now. Other than that, they're basically the same as there's no real discernible difference performance wise.
Cool, I just remember some oc editions had an extra vrm that was intentionally missing from reference cards. The extra vrm doesn't make any odds for waterblocks. I'll find a pic tonight to show what I mean
I think he higher caps was down to xfx...
PGI, any old aftershave or nail polish remover is fine for cleaning TIM, anything alcohol based is OK. I wouldn't even bother applying more if you are just booting for testing anyway.
Matt, this is what I meant by having 'all' the VRM banks full
Edit: From what I can tell the MSI 7970/OC is a VRM short like standard ref cards.
Why is it one short?
What purpose does it serve?
More VRM's usually = better power delivery, but I can't see a single VRM making much of any difference.
