Please help MSI 7970 Lighting

this thread fills me with confidence for the times ahead!!

anyways, have you tried the card in another machine, or can you before you send it off?

MSi are usually pretty good with cooler removals, they don't endorse or support it like EVGA do, but they aren't the ***** XFX are who plaster the thing in warranty stickers.

I doubt they'll remove the cooler in the shop, it should just be a case of visual inspection then try to power it up and send you a replacement. Provided they don't see any visible signs of it being removed all should be well.

Its nice to know bud. I take I contact the place where I brought the card from then they contact MSI or do I contact MSI and explain.

I asked MSI if I could take off the coolers and add my waterblocks which they replied "so long as you don't break anything, no problem" You should be fine and it was probably just bad luck.

Contact the seller and tell them it has just stopped working.

Still in the first year, everything should be done through the retailer, double check the card before you hand it over, take pics if needed and play it dumb if they ask any awkward questions :)

I'm not 100% but I think the little book that comes with the 7970 Lightning even shows you how to remove the cooler :p

RMA: Update, Had a reply yesterday saying my MSI Lighting 7970 is faulty and a replacement is due within 10 day. So happy with that. Thanks for the people who tried to help! its feels crap when things go wrong!

I brought a new pump from OC which got delivered today, looks good:

Can someone tell me, which bit is the out and in if they have this pump!!

This below is my temporary water cooling setup, sorry for the bad pic's (Iphone 4)
borrowing my girlfriends GPU till I get my MSI Lighting 7970 back from RMA

Once I have everything, I will be going water chilled with this:
IMG_0564.jpg

HAILEA 1000A Water Chiller.

I tested the HAILEA 1000A with just my 3930K just after my MSI Lighting 7970 went faulty, had some amazing result, to get my 3930K to 5Ghz I need 1.58 on Vcore, the highest core temps was 27c at idle the rest was 25,21 etc, on full load was 38c sometimes hitting the 40c mark, thats the unit set to 16c.

When I set the unit to 10c, idle temps was a cold 17c and full load was 35c, however mum had the heating blasting out so ambient temps was around 29c due to that, really bad condensation was beginning to form so had to stop. Unit can be set from 28c all the way down to 4c

Unit has a 1600 watt of cooling power, in which it can cool down 1000 litres of water down to 4c in 20 hours. Due to a pc reservoir only holds 3 litres of coolant max. 4c can be achieved in 3 mins. One thing I did notice, my pump, which is the EK DCP 4.0 was struggling to keep the coolant flowing, so had to invest in a more powerful pump.

My MSI lighting will be going water chilled once its back, got the EK-FC7970 Lightning - Acetal+Nickel waterblock for it. Hopefully overclock the hell out of it.

Once project is finished will post pic's up.

Nice work with the chiller. I am not surprised on hearing about the condensation building up quick but is there a way to avoid this (apart from setting the temps higher of course)?

Glad you sent it back and hopefully all good with the next one :)

Cheers gregster. I still think 1.58 on Vcore is high to get 5Ghz. What setting do you have my I ask. Then again you may have a better chip then me

Mine is set at:
1.495V Vcore
1.18 VTT
VCCSA 1.2
PLL 1.85

My mem is clocked to 2333Mhz at 1.65V (11-12-12-30-T2) it is loose but nice and stable.

Hope these settings help :)

My chip is quite golden and you shouldn't need to go above 1.5V on the core for 5GHZ

Hi Subzero,

Without having to sift through 40+ comments, was your lightning 100% dead as in it wouldn't power on at all, no fans no lights etc...?

If so how long from sending it away to getting confirmation of replacement did it take?

Returning my Lightning some time this week as its died a complete mystery death :(

Hi bud, well I sent a email on the 1/11/2012 which was a Thursday, I got a reply back with a RMA number on Firday 2nd saying which date would be good to get DPD to pick up card. I said 5/11/12, so DPD picked it up and they had it on tuesday and tested it and emailed me saying it was faulty and a replacement is on its way. so not long really, and yes my card was dead!! nothing happening. I think MSI are good on RMA then again they all be good and bad I guess.

Were you still inside 28 days from purchase? I hear great things about MSI RMA, I'd imagine they are fine.

Me too, I rebuilt into a new motherboard and the thing was just dead...

Hmm I was told by OcUK staff that as my card is over 28 days old it has to go back to MSI in Holland for test, doesn't seem that happend in your case...

Hummm, Well all I was told from where I got my from, It was going to take 10 days to process! maybe this is happening to me, but I can track my RMA online can you do that on yours!

Not sure yet as I haven't sent the card yet, its all boxed up just waiting for me to get some spare time to send it!

It could have been sent to MSI, I've also been quoted 7-10 days from OcUK...

These cards must be sensitive to something, time to break out my earth strap for the next build I think.
