Hi chaps, I have just built my first self pc PC, installed windows on an SSD and put a brand new 2TB Seagate in there.

SSD seems fine, but W8 cannot do anything with the HDD, I tried to initiate it with the storage manager but it said it had an I/O error and could not do it, it also only showed around 4GB rather than the full capacity. I haven't connected it to the Internet yet (unavailable for a week), so I am not sure if it needs a driver installed, or does it mean the drive is dead and I need a new one?

Anyone have any ideas what the issue may be?

Cheers,
ed

Sounds like it may be faulty, before you do sent it back you could try a different sata port/cable or see if its properly detected in a diff pc if possible.

What's your motherboard? It's most likely related to the SATA controller not recognising 2TB drives properly, they might be a BIOS update or workaround out there.

Use SeaTools to run a scan on it. There may also be newer firmware available for the drive.

What is it showing up as in the bios? When i had a duff 500GB drive, it showed up as ST_M13FQBL rather than the normal ST500DM002-1BC142. It showed a 3.86GB capacity and I got an I/O error when attempting to initialise it. It was DOA and had to be rma'd. The replacement was fine.

Mine is also showing 3.86GB, though shows ST2000DM001-CH164, which is the proper model number afaik.
"It was DOA and had to be rma'd" does this mean you returned it? If so, how long did it take to be replaced?

Motherboard is ASRock Extreme6, I am now trying to install the drivers, I may need to wait for a cd drive/internet though. I tried it in a few sata ports, SATA II and SATA III and no luck

I don't have a copy of sea tools unfortunately,

It's available for free from Seagate's website.

I recently had to RMA one of my ST3000DM001 drives. OcUK shipped the replacement the same day they received my broken one.

Rma'd meaning returned for a replacement as it was kaput. Can't remember exactly how long it took, but it was quite quick considering I found out it was dead on boxing day and had the replacement before the new year.
