Games with a lot of atmosphere.

That level in Thief, The Cradle? If that's what it was called - the abandoned orphanage any how. That was damned freaky! Shame it was such a short lived part of the game!

System Shock 2
Fear (1)
Stalker (modded)
Amnesia
Deus Ex games

My favourite being Stalker : Call of Pripyat with, so far, either the Sigerous mod (2.1) or the Misery mod.

Oh the most atmospheric game that I have ever played is the original Alien versus Predator and it's sequel Alien versus Predator 2. Ok that's two games lol. But seriously, they were scary games. Playing as a marine in either of those games in a dark room with the music turned, so it's just the sound effects.

Beep, beep, beep....... ARRGGHHHHHHHHHH

I don't think I have played any game that has come close to the nerve wrecking dread I had playing those. They were awesome. Played them both mulitple times.

Doom3 Started out well, but didn't maintain it. Dead space was another good effort I thought but still just a pale imitation of the mind numbing terror that I had playing AVP :-)

Exactly this - played it at night in the dark with headphones - can still remember how poop scared I was to enter a dark building as a marine

I know it's not a PC game, but I found the whole end-of-the-world melancholy of Final Fantasy X very atmospheric.

Skyrim.

If you completely immerse yourself - (read headphones), then it's absolutely incredible. I've jumped many a times playing Skyrim, but you have to use in game music.

To be fair, same can be said of most TES/FO games.

Must be all younger gamers here :p I can't believe only 3 people mentioned AVP in this thread so far. I know some people who never made it past the first level because the tension was too much :D

Original AvP.
F.E.A.R.

'Cans on, volume up, lights off, they top any list.

Everything else pales in comparison for me.

Planetside 2 - good atomsphere - light trails everywhere, hundreds of people and a pretty environment, what more do you want? :D

Allways liked morrowinds bleak windswept world.

When you were trudging round the place and it started raining, it all kinda worked.

Another one would be battlezone, the original arcade put you right there, but the pc version in 98 on the moon worked well... more so in 3d with the fishbowl effect.

the mass effect series, ive never found a game so immersive in my life along with an absolutely great story line, also eats through quite a lot of hours, in total ive spent about 120 hours playing all three games, also oblivion, spend about the same amount of time playing that game alone, not including the expansions either.
