Western Digital Reds...problems?

Anyone had a particular high rate of 'dead on arrival' failures with these drives?

I only ask as I have bought three, all 3TB drives, and two of them seem to be faulty. Both don't seem to spin up properly - they will whir to start up, click, and then spin down. Both of my dead ones could be detected in BIOS but showed as a drive with 0.0GB capacity

Of the three I bought, two were from OcUK, and one from another source, and it was one from each supplier that was dead.

Just seemed a high failure rate to me, statistically insignificant but unusual all the same!

I bought 6x 3TB drives and not had any issues, theyve been sat in a RAID6 array for around a week now and no probs.

Bad luck I guess?

But, importantly, the one that IS working is from OcUK so thats OK

Why? What are the real life advantages over the greens? They are so much more expensive...

Quiet, cool, low power consumption, designed to be powered-on 24x7 and with specific NAS applications in mind, and a longer warranty than greens. For something that will last probably 5 years, I don't care about a £23 price difference (the current price difference between a 3TB Red and a 3TB Green) -- that's £1.53 difference per TB per year. Not exactly breaking the bank!

Also have had no issues with my 2 x 3Tb Red's (touch wood).

Can even tell they are on over the sound of my GTX 570's.

I have two 3tb reds. 1 from here and 1 from elsewhere and both fine.

Well got my replacement from OcUK this afternoon, touch wood its fine...

The other duff drive I am waiting to return to the supplier, have to say I commend OcUK for the rapid turnaround, to post a drive back to them and have a replacement on Wednesday, can't knock that for service! And they sent me a mini back of haribo in the package too

would you recomend the reds as single dives or would you still got for the greens ? as i am wanting a 3tb drive to go into my htpc but can not make my mind up. its not the price but herd the reds are no good for single drive use and herd they are.

had a faulty on e too, didnt even last a day had tons of bad sectors on it, so far id say the reds are no more reliable than the greens, if you TLER then reds are you only choice other than the RE range.
