DirectX 11.1 exclusive to Windows 8, Microsoft confirms

I've just switched to Windows Phone as well and the Windows 8 interface FKA Metro makes a lot more sense when you've used Windows Phone.

Ive been using a windows phone for 21 months now, and the only reason I was tempted to get Win8. It just does not offer anything to me so I have refrained from buying it.

It will be the only release of windows since Win3.1 that I have not owned! (Yes, I also had ME <shudders>)

When ME first came out, I thought it was great, and then I upgraded my PC and it became as stable as a 1-legged giraffe!

I still have the CD too, and even tried to install it on Hyper-V, but even that says "No way Jose!". ;)

I am using windows 8 to write this, and it's not too bad, the problem I think is that by default it's not really good for people who are more into the techie side of computers and computers as a hobbie or for IT pro's..... However I have found since purchasing StartIsBack (which brings back the actual windows 7 start menu from windows 8 sources without hacking it) that I'm using the PC in the exact same way I did with windows 7 and in that respect I like it. The ribbon interface is nice, task manager is alright, hyper-v etc is all quite good... The desktop is now how i'm used to it, and no stupid charms bar or other hot spot corners, and no dumbed down app centric start screen....

The only thing I do actually miss which I really don't understand Microsoft removing is Aero, I thought aero looked pretty smart tbh.. It does however mean that I can't see much of a reason to go to Win8 from Win7 cos I'm using it in pretty much the exact same way.

All you ME bashers :D, I thought it was ok, they have all been ok but XP was exceptional, Vista and win7 which are the same, are resource hogs really, win7 best feature is it's foundation codec.

I still use XP64 lots of the time especially love windows explorer in classic mode and right click search and an integrated folder size app makes it untouchable.

Not sure if people are aware MS also pulled Media centre and codecs from win8. but if you buy Professional I believe for a short while you can get the upgrade free

Funnily enough I just had a mate on the phone sitting at the returns counter (purple shirts store) with a new Win8 laptop, now he is not that technical so it seems 8 is also not that friendly to the non techy :D

Just installed windows 8. Got it running and looking exactly like windows 7 but faster. :)

Boot times are halved (even with an ssd) and shut down is now instant.

All you need is Start8 and Skip Windows Suite Settings.

Exactly what I have, Quite surprised mow much quicker it was!

For what reason should I switch to Windows 8 from Windows 7? I know google will help but if someone could give me some pluses, I would be thankful :)

I'd say quite the opposite actually. Windows 8 brings back all the management tools that were in XP Pro but vanished with Windows 7 (unless you bought Ultimate).

Ahhh ya see i've always had the top version so never noticed, I suppose though you are right for business, things like bitlocker, directaccess and branchcache are now all in the pro version but it is still the top version...

My point I was really making was more about the default UI though than anything else

Agreed. win8 is rubbish

Just a random comment, or backed up by any solid facts?

I've been using Windows 8 on and off since the customer preview, and the only actual problem I've found with it is with Hyper-V (which most consumers are unlikely to use).

Stability - no issues.
Performance - no issues.

The only thing I don't like (which relates to the Modern UI) is the in-app advertisements.

Other than that's it's at least as good as Windows 7.
