Alienware m18x or m17x r4?

I wonder if I could get one down from £1500 to my budget of around £1k :p

I want an m17x sooo bad, it just looks miles better than a p170em, and I love the amounts of ports it has, the hdmi in sounds really cool too :D

yes the alienware M17x r4 is a much better looking machine then the Clevo, I never took to the Clevo looks either.

Base model is £1299 but that won't come with a 1080 screen, and a lower spec GPU.

You'll be looking at 6GB, 500GB HD, 1080p screen, AMD 7970M and only a DVD drive for around £1300 if you haggle, could still be out of your reach but give it a go, you never know...

Exactly what I was thinking :p

I don't need a hard drive in it, as ill use my ssds from my current pc in it, and I think its more worth it to upgrade the ram myself, you got a huge amount off! :p

It's not that I don't like the looks of the clevo, personally I like them, but to me there is a lot more I like about the alienware, I prefer the keyboard on it, for me it has to be either the normal type of key or chicklet keys, not the clevo's weird hybrid style, the leds are a huge selling point for me, I absolutely love having them, and I was really unhappy that the clevo didn't have orange ones, the alienware does though :D the alienware also has a soft touch plastic on it, which is awesome, it also has more ports, including the hdmi in one :D unfortunately it doesn't have dvi, but I could get an adapter, would the laptop be capable of running eyefinity? As I'm not sure because of the ports

another reason I choose AW over clevo is speakers! clevo usually use terrible speakers.
The speakers are great in both my m14x and m17x.

And don't get me started on the clevo keyboard, just look at the key layout. I hate laptops that merge the number pad with the main keys, either do it properly or don't bother with a number pad IMHO.

If I can't get an r4 for cheap enough, I may get a refurbished r3 with a 580m and upgrade the gpu

Don't know if you're interested but there's currently 4 R3' on the outlet all with the 580M, and reasonable specs. The cheapest is £852 + VAT and del which comes with a good processor, Blu-Ray and 1080P (min HDD and memory but you can upgrade that yourself).

I'm currently away now - won't be back until mid December. Does anyone know if I could buy a machine on the oultet and have it delivered to an address different to the billing address, such as my brother? Just in case I spot one I want to go for.

I saw that too, that's why I was asking that question :p

I don't have the money yet anyway, I am around halfway in therms of saving up, and I still need to sell the parts from my pc first

Hi all,

Been following this thread for a long time and I'm now getting quite close to pulling the trigger on an m17x r4.

After a phonecall and some email exchange I'm being offered the following system for £1580:

i7-3740QM
2GB 7970M
8GB memory
500GB hard drive
Killer Wireless-N 1103
DVD/Writer

This is much better than what I was being offered yesterday however I wish I bought early October. The system was being offered with 16GB memory and a 680M GPU with a discount of £595 not including discounts. With 10% off it came to just under £1500. I still wonder how likely it is to see such an offer again.

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers

You see I'd heard the speakers in the Clevo were meant to now quite decent, I can't speak of the Alienware M17x speakers as I've not got my laptop yet... Still waiting for it to be shipped..

However I tend not to use the speakers and use a headset anyhow.

Now, the keyboard however. I'm not keen on these new chiclet style keyboards, WASD gaming on them? Not so sure, the Alienware keyboard looked a lot better, again i'll know when I get my machine.

the HDMI in is a rare feature for a laptop. I'll use it for a PS3 I just liked how the Alienware had Fn F7 to disable the onboard graphics and use the discrete instead - ok battery will suffer for this but i don't think i'll be using my M17x on battery all that often to be truthful.

Nearly the same spec as what I got, your CPU is better then what I managed to get, was this with a 1080 screen?

the 7970M is still going to be superb GPU, can always upgrade the HD yourself later on, see if they'll knock £100 off as you'd be amazed at what they'll do. Say you'll give debit card number right there if they knock more off, say you've only got £1450 budget and you can buy a Samsung with better spec HD and more memory (which you can) but make no mention of the GPU as that is a MUCH better spec then say a Samsung 700GC.

ninja2000, do you use the belkin slim backpack for your m17x? if so does it fit ok? thanks

- Adam

I sure do, it is a great cheap backpack. Mine has lasted for nearly 2 years.
It easily fits laptop, psu, mouse and a few small odds and ends. Just dont expect to get a load of books in there with it

They are better, but still no match for the alienware. I game with a headset on, but often listen to music through speakers if I am working from home. They dont replace a decent set of stereo speakers, but they are great for a laptop.

Also, another great feature of the r4 is the creative labs soundblaster recon chip, it gives much cleaners sound than the nasty realtek chips. The clevo's always have terribly sound (speakers are bad but also the sound quality throught the jack is terrible, so much so I had to buy a usb headset).
Bear in mind though, I am very fussy when it comes to laptops, I am sure average Joe wouldnt care less.

Here is the emailed spec:

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.7GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
English Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
2GB GDDR5 AMD® Radeon™ HD 7970M
8192MB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
500GB 7,200rpm SATA 3Gb/s HDD
17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
Alienware M17x Stealth Black
DVD+/-RW (Read/Write)
Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO with Bluetooth 4.0

I've written back to the sales rep with your suggestion. Lets see what happens. I already have an Crucial M4 128GB SSD so I'm not too bothered about the hard drive and memory is cheap (and apparently easy to install).

Dell response to my email:

"Only I thing I would like to tell you is even though Samsung is offering at a better price you know that it is Alien ware and when coming to the gaming systems there is none better.

I agree that with holiday period approaching you cannot over spend but we can definitely guarantee that the amount we are requesting you would be worth it.
I have spoken to my manager again and the absolute final price we can offer will be £1561.56 including vat and delivery.

My small request is I know price is important just look at the specifications and the performance on the laptop and I know you agree."

That's another £20 off at least.

You want to be on the phone to them rather than email, i wouldn't be surprised if they could only offer certain discounts over the phone.

Awesome im going to order one then! thanks for the info! do you use a sleeve of any kind also? - Adam

I think I'm gonna cancel mine. 6 days before I'm meant to have it and it's still in pre production. I was hoping to have it on my holidays but it's looking like near Christmas.

Just stick it out, I know its really painful waiting for it, but you'll be glad you did. I'm not hopeful of getting mine for around four weeks, i'm three days in and I doubt I'll see it before 14 Dec TBH.

I was hoping to get it before my Brithday - 4th december but doubt it.

gives me more time to shop for a desk, office chair and screen for it anyhow as the powers that be (missus) has now agreed to let me put a desk into the dining room to actually use it... so no more on the sofa gaming for me, I'm getting my own little space - finally.... Two years without a desk, finally getting one, provided I don't sit there ALL the time...

lol stick with it, I'm sure you'll get it soon..
