If I can't get an r4 for cheap enough, I may get a refurbished r3 with a 580m and upgrade the gpu
another reason I choose AW over clevo is speakers! clevo usually use terrible speakers.
The speakers are great in both my m14x and m17x.
And don't get me started on the clevo keyboard, just look at the key layout. I hate laptops that merge the number pad with the main keys, either do it properly or don't bother with a number pad IMHO.
Hi all,
Been following this thread for a long time and I'm now getting quite close to pulling the trigger on an m17x r4.
After a phonecall and some email exchange I'm being offered the following system for £1580:
i7-3740QM
2GB 7970M
8GB memory
500GB hard drive
Killer Wireless-N 1103
DVD/Writer
This is much better than what I was being offered yesterday however I wish I bought early October. The system was being offered with 16GB memory and a 680M GPU with a discount of £595 not including discounts. With 10% off it came to just under £1500. I still wonder how likely it is to see such an offer again.
What are your thoughts on this?
Cheers
ninja2000, do you use the belkin slim backpack for your m17x? if so does it fit ok? thanks

You see I'd heard the speakers in the Clevo were meant to now quite decent, I can't speak of the Alienware M17x speakers as I've not got my laptop yet... Still waiting for it to be shipped..
However I tend not to use the speakers and use a headset anyhow.
Now, the keyboard however. I'm not keen on these new chiclet style keyboards, WASD gaming on them? Not so sure, the Alienware keyboard looked a lot better, again i'll know when I get my machine.
the HDMI in is a rare feature for a laptop. I'll use it for a PS3 I just liked how the Alienware had Fn F7 to disable the onboard graphics and use the discrete instead - ok battery will suffer for this but i don't think i'll be using my M17x on battery all that often to be truthful.
Nearly the same spec as what I got, your CPU is better then what I managed to get, was this with a 1080 screen?
the 7970M is still going to be superb GPU, can always upgrade the HD yourself later on, see if they'll knock £100 off as you'd be amazed at what they'll do. Say you'll give debit card number right there if they knock more off, say you've only got £1450 budget and you can buy a Samsung with better spec HD and more memory (which you can) but make no mention of the GPU as that is a MUCH better spec then say a Samsung 700GC.
Dell response to my email:
"Only I thing I would like to tell you is even though Samsung is offering at a better price you know that it is Alien ware and when coming to the gaming systems there is none better.
I agree that with holiday period approaching you cannot over spend but we can definitely guarantee that the amount we are requesting you would be worth it.
I have spoken to my manager again and the absolute final price we can offer will be £1561.56 including vat and delivery.
My small request is I know price is important just look at the specifications and the performance on the laptop and I know you agree."
That's another £20 off at least.
I sure do, it is a great cheap backpack. Mine has lasted for nearly 2 years.
It easily fits laptop, psu, mouse and a few small odds and ends. Just dont expect to get a load of books in there with it
I think I'm gonna cancel mine. 6 days before I'm meant to have it and it's still in pre production. I was hoping to have it on my holidays but it's looking like near Christmas.
