Call of Dooty: Why has gaming descended into CGI?

Yes, I'm not targetting Call of Duty. It just seems that us old skool, hardcore gamers are being **** on from a great height.

What are good games nowadays?

Agreed. These days it's all about attracting as many people as possible, which means lowering the skill ceiling. I've been playing blops 2 online and it's utterly farcical. Picture this scenario - someone shooting someone who hasn't seen them in the back or side, while someone is shooting them in the back or side, while someone is shooting them ... and so on and so on ... all while random killstreaks and grenades/mines are going on killing people at random. It's like a ridiculous Benny Hill show, just everyone has guns. The game is so random, spammy and luck based that anyone can jump onto a server and start getting kills. And that's great, except that it's killing shooters that had any depth or skill requirements as every other developer is trying to copy this template.

I have to agree, I find my self so disconnected with FPS games now, I own a few and have owned many many more but it just seems that they lost all their shine, they are not bad but they are not great either.

I remember playing cod 4 sp, it was so epic I felt cheated and robbed when it was over, a truly great MP is born from a truly great SP and a truly great SP doesn't need MP to sell it.

I want so much for a game to come along that really makes me fall in love with the genre again, something like quake, stripped back with nothing but you, a selection of guns, an even playing field and some ingenuity in map design........ Oh and a little common sense when it comes to spawn patterns! My number one hate with call of duty I might add, the game has its flaws but **** poor map design that relies heavily on spawn locations to funnel and maintain constant action because the map's design is to poor to do it itself bugs me to high hell

You.

is just perfect.

I've never taken to spammy FPS games like COD, but I did spend a good few years playing BF2 almost every night and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Then I stumbled across the Reality-Mod for BF2 and it was just what I was looking for...A FPS which requires tactics, teamwork and, believe it or not, patience. This game is played out on massive maps in comparison to COD titles and it pitches 32 versus 32 players, and it's being tested for 100 plus player servers. I guess it's kind of a cross between a FPS and a RPG. (what does MMO mean?)

I still bought BF3 when it came out but soon got sick of it with all the orange markers, mayhem and all the vehicle close quarters combat.

I've got ArmA2 which was purchased to play DayZ, but I'm yet to play it (Arma) as I've still not fulfilled all the roles available in the RealityMod game.

I keep hearing about this World of Tanks game, can I ask if it's a complexed simulator in which you are in combat with other humans driving tanks?

all shooters are similar you just point and shoot, but if you're on your own you have more freedom of movement and you can alter your gameplay/ tactics, plus stop and think, you're in no rush, i.e Bioshock/ crysis/ Fear

the trouble is there are too many sequels, i.e dead space 3, crysis 3, far cry 3.....all the bloody same, Borderlands 2..... two repeat playthroughs just to get up to level 50. :(

i bet you Far Cry 3 will be 85% the same as the 2nd game

I will buy dead space 3, its the only game I know of like it so a new title is something I am excited about, I love the genre of survival horror and its thin on the ground so I will buy the title, resident evil also though I gave that last hash of a resi a miss, gears of war wanna be tripe!
sequels are fine, innovation doesn't have to be ground breaking as long as the game doesn't sell its self out to amass sales. be what it is and be It well don't cripple the major aspect of the genre and make it accessible to every tom Robert and harry to abuse.

Kill streaks are akin to a notification in Dead space seconds before an alien appears suddenly letting you know its going to appear pausing the game as it does so with a text reading 'E' TO CLOSE HATCH BEFORE THE ALIAN APPEARS!
It goes against what the genre is, we should start calling first person shooters spawn and spams.

Have you seen DS3 gameplay? It's not DS, at all. I have and loved the first two, but they've turned the third into a cover shooter. It looks dire.

I understand where the Op is coming from but a few years too late to be ringing the alarm bells now.

If it was not for Indies, I would have ditched playing new games years ago.

It is easy to look at Popular music and say "OMG, music is dead".

It is far from true though, open your eyes :)

One cannot cherry pick a few mainstream, popular titles and say they represent the entire industry. They simply represent popular culture.

Gaming is not a nerdy sub-culture any more, I selfishly wish it still was in some ways, but it is not.

If people meed to point fingers, then I would suggest the PS2 generation would be a good start.

Maybe the future would have been better in Segas hands and not Sonys? Someone for whom tradition and heritage meant something within the industry, not just all about making money.

Yeh I play arma with havoc-company.com evervy Sunday night its a cool game, but nothing like Quake.

It's not a sim, its like an FPS but in tanks with an added £rd "tank" view. 15 v 15 and clan wars, its sort of like CS but in a tank.

Why? because Call of Duty pulls immense sales figures, Black Ops 2 grossed $500 million in 24 hours and all designers and publishers of FPS games really need a piece of that pie. Don't get me wrong, some of my best gaming days were in Quake 2 and Quake 3, but the genre has evolved (some would say devolved).

Convergence, Tyranny of the majority. Mass market appeal dictates development which itself is very much more expensive now

Your nerdy little desires are once again relegated to the 2D scrollers you might get on steam perhaps

What good Indie's are there?

I was waiting for CoH2 but THQ are dead so thats RTS dead until a new Men of War is released.

C&C was raped.

Soldier of Fortune was shutdown due the raping of CoD. I love sof2 :/

I'm thinking of learning sims, i am gonna start with rise of flight!

Never got round to playing SoF2 as much as the first [still have it in my cupboard], but OMG, I spent most of my childhood with good old 56k playing the first one, I wish they made a new SoF

When I said SIM I meant are the controls complexed as in you need to know lots of keys for different commands and allow for shell drop, as opposed to WSAD keys with left click for fire and what you aim at you hit??

No, no I have not actually as I was going to wait slightly closer to release to watch the trailers and get in on the pre release media.

your news saddens me greatly, as I said it is really the only one of its kind, I cant think of another space survival suspense horror title to date quite like it, they had no need to change it at all.

off to investigate!

why dont you play a flight simulator, WW2 air aces, i used to have that Ilusovitch Sturmovitch thing, i used to fly the ME109E great fun or the FW190, very hard to fly too, you have to control the flaps, landing gear, engine RPM etc :D

Battlestations Midway is fun too, one forgets these games, i used to torpedo JAP aircraft carriers ha ha, or sink battleships, these games take getting used to but are quite good fun

They did, we waited years and this is what we got, it made me vommit:
