Of course, this was definitely to be expected.

There will most likely still be some software issues in a months time but again I was expecting this. If you look at the Xbox 360 launch and completely disregard the overheating issues and the fact they had to extend the warranty to cover it, it still suffered from hard drive issues or hard drives that just didn't work, lock ups, random erroneus error messages, graphical corruption, bad frame rates etc.

None of these issues concern me. Hard lock ups and frame rate issues will be fixed in software updates. Loading times will also be fixed although might be connected to the online service which is getting utterly annihilated due to so many people trying to connect to it. Sure it will get annoying until it's fixed, if anyones concerned about it that much they should probably just cancel their pre-order and pick one up after Christmas.

This...people like to forget the issues which have happened in the past with previous launches as it no longer effects them. :p

I'm sure it will be something they're aware of and will get sorted out.

Its interesting that even mainstream news media are reporting that the Wii-U looks to be a difficult challenge for Nintendo, one that might fruitlessly put them further into the red.

It was also interesting reading Peter Molyneux's comments on it:

"I struggle to see anything amazing coming out of Nintendo. There are a few, “Oh, that’s smart,” but there’s nothing that makes me rush out as a consumer to buy the new device. I’ll give you a great example of how tech should be used. It’s what Nintendo did with the Wii when it first came out. They introduced motion control. They were one of the first companies to introduce motion control and they had a fantastic Wii Sports Game. As soon as I picked up the controller and started waving it around, I got it. I already understood it. But I’m not sure there’s a same sort of application out there for Wii U. I think to myself, “Well, what’s the reason to get it?” Do you see what I mean?"

I think he might be spot on.
He also discusses using tablets for control, which is what the Wii-U does:

" The thing about the SmartGlass is that the tablet is a thing that you have with you all the time. Now, in that sense, I understand completely as a consumer and I’m excited to see what these guys do with it. But I do have a problem with it. I now have a screen in front of me on my lap and a screen up on the wall that I’m looking at. Which one should I be looking at? Should I be looking up at the big screen and down, or at my lap and up? Should I be checking down on my lap every few seconds? What’s going to incentivize me to move my eyes from the wall to my lap?"

I know they'll be hoping they can pull some of the "hardcore" gamers back to their corner as most saw the Wii as a casual machine, and they really need their money since the console unlike the Wii is being made at a loss, but in the end I think they'll be fine. I think they have hurt themselves with their line up though. For people who already have an Xbox 360, PS3 or even a PC, why bother buying stuff like Batman, Mass Effect 3 or/and Assassins Creed 3 for more on the Wii U. Once they make it into next year and stuff like Pikmin 3, a new Zelda, Rayman Legends, Bayonetta 2 etc. start coming out they'll look much healthier and preferably bringing their games down to the typical 30 - 40 price range.

I can't really agree with what Peter Molyneux had to say though, he just comes off as sounding like he doesn't really want a games console and instead would have been more happy with some one trick pony technology to amuse him for a while. For instance his question saying "Well, what's the reason to get it?", why can't "the games" be a valid answer for this, why does he need some new revolutionary technology to justify it.

Also his confusion about whether he should be looking at the TV or his controller screen... this is purely dependant on the game. Some for instance use it as an inventory, maybe car games would use it as a rear view mirror, or maybe a football game using it for game stats and player info on the fly. It should be obvious that you need to look at your TV and using the controller screen on an as-needed basis.

Who listens to anything Molyneux says nowadays anyway?

Nobody with any sense if he's flogging one of his games, however, on this occasion I do agree with him in regards to switching between a TV and secondary screen. Unless it's used cleverly, it's not a great experience.

I realy want the wii u to go on and be a great console ,but I honestly don't think it's going to happen .
If it came out around the same time as Xbox 360 it would have faired better but to me it's like dreamcast all over again which failed due to being inferior to the ps2 which followed a year later and that's the problem here it's launched before the next Xbox and ps which I'm guessing and hoping will be I big leap in hardware with both machines at least been able to run 1080p and nothing below that for all games.
The competition has also had more time to perfect the online side of things something which ninty is still learning then there's the large fan base, Nintendo seem to fair better with handhelds than consoles unlike Sony and ms .

So here is my prediction I think think this will be nintys last home console and will keep on pushing out great handhelds ms and Sony if it doesn't go into financial ruin will dominate the gaming market on the console front and then when it's a 2 horse race apple will dive in with its first ever console which will kill of Sony all together :D

Disappointing by the lack of any decent games at all for this, I would have thought Nintendo would have learned from previous consoles. It seems SMBU is the only one really worth picking up and even then its just stuff we've played on wii/ds

the cost is mental too, its hardly a family friendly price and why get this when you can get a 360 for 1/3 of the cost with games at all ages? Do Nintendo really think that a massive pad with a screen is going to con people that became annoyed with the Wii's motion controls apart from at Christmas or parties?

Im glad Giantbomb gave this the proper once over, and im not surprised that they sound fed up - its a messy console with no clear goal and the games suck ass.

It's all hugely underwhelming, really. I've never felt so uninterested in a console launch before and I've owned pretty much all of them since the PS1.

Where are the games? Where is the wow factor?

I think Nintendo just need some time, after all the console is new and having a rough start isn't unheard of :p Once they get some more decent game releases (like Zelda next year) and iron out the issues with the console I think it'll do a lot better. Also I can't see Apple joining the gaming front and killing off Sony - they're huge in Japan and tend to be targeted more by Eastern developers. Somehow I doubt Apple would get the licensing/rights to all the JRPGs over Sony :p

I mean you can read through these BBC articles and pick up people supporting the product also like Jason Schreir from Kokatu.

But people who do look into Nintendo's new system may be surprised at just how robust its software library is.

With a collection of surprising indie games on the horizon as well as a strong lineup of original games like New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, ZombiU, and Bayonetta 2, the Wii U's short-term line-up is strong.

Once customers get used to the unorthodox controller, they may find themselves loving how it lets them interact with games, so long as the Wii U continues to deliver consistently high-quality software.

The controller might look strange, but it feels great, and playing around with it has been nothing but fun so far.

So forget about the Wii U's existential dilemma. Bring on the games.

The game library through the launch window is fairly robust, it takes a while for that 'killer app' to come around with the majority of consoles and especially on the previous launches that have come from others.

E3 is going to be the big hurdle and if they can come to that show all guns blazing revealing all their 'killer apps' titles which do take longer to develop then they'll be onto a winner.

Looking forward to getting mines :)

This really looks like an awful console, and as soon as the next Playstation and Xbox's are released it will be completely irrelevant. They will be much much more powerful and once again devs will focus on developing their multiplat games for those too while nintendo continues to release mini games and virtual scales for the Wii.

Nintendo need to stop making consoles, they should do a sega and just release their franchises like Mario on other consoles.

People are calling this underwhelming but unless Ms and Sony pull something miraculous out of the hat the thought of their two next gen consoles doesn't excite me in the slightest, they look to be slight graphical upgrades at best. At least with the WiiU you can look forward to playing old favourites like Zelda, Mario and Metroid in 1080p with a regular controller instead a wiggle stick.

One report has said its not really any better than the current ps3/xbox except it has 2gb ram and hd output.

When i watch this a EGexpo it really didnt excite me.

I think people were expecting too much from the Wii U. Apart from the silly software errors what were people expecting from a new console? Actually, what are people expecting from Sony and Microsoft new consoles? Apart shiny new graphics which have been on the PC for the past 5 years.

Again Nintendo have tried to bring something new to the console world and it may or may not work. We still need to give it time for when a proper Zelda and Mario game comes out but unless you was around growing up watching the move from 8 bit to 16 bit and 2D to 3D games then the WOW factor went from new consoles releases years ago. Perhaps now we have or nearly reached our peak. Probably explains the reason this console generation has gone on for so long.
