Laptop replacement

This may cause some laughs but is a genuine question.

My laptop is very old and slow so I want to replace it with a PC.

I use it only for web browsing, as a media centre and the only game I play is Minecraft.

I am getting only 10fps currently even with the graphics settings turned down which is pathetic.

I would like to be able to play at a decent fps with the settings at max.

Could you spec me a system that would meet my needs for the lowest budget possible (under £1200).

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any parts that can be reused?
Do you need a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and OS ect

Do you want it for playing anything other than Minecraft? As for £1200 you can get a very good gaming PC?

No don't need it for anything else and would like to stay as cheap as possible but that is my maximum budget hopefully it wont cost that much

A nice solid system which should last you a good few years even if you want to play other games.

However, for Minecraft, this will do:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £95.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00403) £79.99
1 x ASRock FM2A75M-DGS AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £52.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £49.99
1 x OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply £32.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit (PV38G213C1K) £31.99
1 x BitFenix Merc Beta Gaming Case - Black £29.99
1 x Samsung SH-224BB/BEBE 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £403.02 (includes shipping : £11.75).

I was just just about to post this up.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST2000DM001) £74.99
1 x ASRock FM2A75M-DGS AMD A75 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £52.99
1 x AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX) £49.99
1 x XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £43.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit (PV38G213C1K) £31.99
1 x Zalman T1 Mini Tower Case - Black £17.99
1 x Samsung SH-224BB/BEBE 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £469.51 (includes shipping : £10.50).

The SSD will make everything on it feel faster and cut down boot times.
The large HDD will be great for storing stuff for a media center.

Hi thanks for your quick responses. I didn't realise it could be done for so cheaply. I'm particularly interested in the Intel build. Would that be able to handle everything on maximum settings at high frame rates? Would it be worth it/not much extra to upgrade to an i5 or more RAM? Or would this be completely unnecessary. I'm thinking in terms of future proofing a bit. Thanks for all the help so far it is much appreciated.

For Minecraft any of the builds can play it on max settings with no problems. Only lag you'll get is server lag if you're playing online.

The Intel one will be able to play more recent games, but not on max. Swap the CPU/PSU/GPU for these on the Intel build and you'll have a system that can play most games and future games comfortably:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x HIS HD 7850 IceQ X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (H785QN1G2M) w/ FARCRY3, Nexuiz & Sleeping Dogs PC Games £149.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020047-UK) £49.99
Total : £396.97 (includes shipping : £10.00).

as said above, minecraft is not an intensive game.
it's good to see people not just speccing a £1200 PC when a £400 one will do.

that being said,
Minecraft is good and all, but if you build a new PC, might aswell make it half decent and open the door to being able to play other games too. The last thing you want to do is to build a PC then get a game that you can't play. Orcvader's GPU CPU and PSU recommendations above seem pretty good.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your advise so far. Due to my lack of knowledge and confidence in building PC's would any of the pre built systems meet my needs as sufficiently? I think I would be more comfortable just getting something out of the box already built although I understand this will be more expensive.

Any suggestions?
