Processor upgrade - bonkers prcing

I have a Gigabyte socket 1366 and for the less than a 990X I can but this:

Upgrading old tech is not always cost effective. I'm on x58 too, was hoping to change to a 970 but it looks like I've left it too late.

I think you're missing that the 3820 is a quad core? whereas 990X is a previous generation hex core.

990x is a 6 core cpu wheras that sandybridge E chip is a quad core

Your comparing the best LGA1366 CPU ever made against a middle range CPU that is 3 years newer, what do you expect?

Bottom line is top end CPUs remain silly expensive compared to newer gens for quite a long time.

If you want to upgrade, upgrade?

There is still a market for people that just want to stick a new cpu in and get better performance. a lot of companies will not go through a big upgrade proceedure as things like static BOM, deployable images etc will have to change. So a company would upgrade the cpu for say £700 and the machine gets a performance boost with little downtime and hassle. If the company were to change the motherboard, memory, cpu, etc etc there would be testing time, new image created, compatability check with software and, as time is money, could cost several times that.

Socket 1155 = Sandy Bridge

990X = Socket 1366

3820 = Socket 2011

It's 2 different sockets? you'd need different mobos and RAM if you went with either.
