14 years ago I may have been playing HL

I played it a year after it came out. It was one of the few games including Quake, that got me hooked into First Person Shooters and in general, PC Gaming.

I'll never forget the first time I played through HL. An experience I'll never forget. It was waay ahead of its time compared to other FPS games. That and the fact the mod scene for it exploded, really made it one of best games ever.

It was rather awesome downloading the latest HL patch on a cruddy dial up, and meeting friends online in either Death Match Classic or TFC, which later evolved to Counter-Strike.

Maybe it's just nostalgia and getting older, but I don't find things anywhere near as fun with others games anymore.:(

One of the first games to change FPS from Doom/Quake 'run and gun' with little to no story to an interactive world and narrative.

HL and Unreal were the two games that really pushed this forward.

Doom had one of best twists in an FPS!
I think you can add Goldeneye to that list, in fact I am fairly sure it was out before HL and was one of the first 'intelligent shooters'.

May have still been using my old P1 200Mhz jobby then, the PIII must have been a couple of years later.

In that case it was Ultimate Soccer Manager which, to this day, is the best football management game ever made.

Dear god that game was awesome. Says enough that I haven't played a football manger properly since...

Friday nights, joining WON server chat rooms, then off to Sweep server for some turkeyburgers. Ahh the good old TFC days.

I miss Barrysworld :(

Early days on their tfc servers, miss those...

Custom maps, NML (no mans land) such a blast.

Hl though i remember the day i picked it up from pc world derby, the single best 35 quid i ever spent on a game.

Hard to imagine it all coming good for a single game ever again, ground breaking counterstrike, simple loving team fortress... the mod that was 'you're thing' (firearms, day of defeat, sven co-op) ect...

All that for free on top of what was and probably still is the single most leap in a single player fps experience.

Was an incredible game and very few titles have achieved the same feeling you'd get from playing it (g man / squid in a can etc). HL2 was an utter load of cack in comparison but then sequels often are when you're talking about something that evoked such emotion.
Lets hope Valve are working on a proper game and not another Portal rehash :)

This. HL was overrated :)

Lol, good to see some other lovers of the game :). Came on 2 floppy disks and there was a weird glitch (or at least there was in my game) where if you got too much money, for example £480,000,000, at the end of the season it gave you negative the same amount.

Didn't matter though as by the time that was happening, due to increased cost, burgers were about £500 each and shirts were £10,000.

Wow 14 years. I had it for Xmas and played it solidly over the holiday period. Think I had to resort to a cheat though to get past the final part of the Alien section. Happy days.

Didn't play it at the time, picked it up a few years ago when Steam were selling it for $0.99. Yeah, back before there was a UK regional version of Steam.

Played it and though "meh", then stopped playing it.

Played HL2 when it came out though. Didn't like that either.

14 years ago I was probably playing Championship Manager.

I got my copy from Special Reserve for subscription to them, anyone remember them?

Still got the jewel cases of it, opposing force, and blue shift.

14 years?!

In my opinion the best first person shooter

I'd also put it up there with one of the most important, influential and pioneering games of all time.
