Hi,My problems as the title says really. If i boot and shut down straight away its super quick doing both. However,If i am gaming for a while and then quit to desktop and shut down it can take 40 seconds or so.I dont have many programs running and im running fw1.4 so i was wondering if this is normal? I know its not much of a problem but its bugging me a bit

isnt fw 1.5 the latest? what board are you using? using rst drivers? should shutdown quicker than that imo

As wazza says... a detailed spec of your PC would help. Also an indication if this is a new build, or have you cloned your previous OS onto the SSD?

Almost sounds like it's waiting for a program/application to close before it can shut down your PC (though this should really show when you try to shut down).

and also as wazza says, firmware 1.5 is the latest. And as an owner of a couple of these drives myself, I would strongly recommend you upgrade to the latest firmware. See: http://www.ocztechnology.com/ssd_tools/OCZ_Vertex_4_and_Agility_4/

and please take heed of what it says in the notes.
IE.2. Shutdown and restart the system.
This does mean shutdown your PC (IE. remove power to drive) and not just restart your PC.
Badly worded in my opinion.

I've just been testing my Vertex 4 (fw 1.5) out on a fresh install of W8 Pro 64Bit and have been using the PC all morning and just did a shut down which took 10 seconds.

I would suspect much of your issue is with the old fw.

Not totally convinced that the earlier firmware is the problem. Could be I suppose. But not aware, or come across any issues over on the OCZ forums. But always best to be on the latest version, especially if you are encountering problems. It's certainly the first thing that OCZ will ask you to do should be post on their forums looking for help.

The differences between 1.4 and 1.5 are not that great. And are mainly in the area of improved idle time garbage collection and tweaks to the performance mode of the drive.

- Improved sequential file transfer performance for 128GB, 256GB and 512GB models
- Optimized idle garbage collection algorithms to extend the benefits of performance mode by enabling the feature across a greater percentage of the drive
- Improved HBA / RAID card compatibility
- Further improved compatibility with desktop and mobile ATA security features
- Corrected a corner case issue where the ‘Remaining Life’ SMART attribute could be reported incorrectly

Basically need more info from the OP.

PS. If you have not already. Then I would suggest checking the Windows Event Viewer round the time of one of these slow shutdowns. And seeing if there are any error/warning messages. Could give you a clue.

Hi,sorry for being too vague. Its a clean install 1 week ago and i replaced a corsair 120gb which was slowing down but it was full at the time so i assumed it may of just been that.Im running an asus p8z68-v/gen3 board with a 2600k,a 1200wt corsair ax psu and a second drive which is a seagate green 2tb thats nearly full.I have updated all drivers on mobo although the asus site`s drivers for it seem pretty old.Can i update the fw with losing everything or will it wipe it? thanks for the help by the way.

Thank you.I dont have a spare drive kicking about or i would do it now.It seems like maybe the game hasnt shut down or something else is running but ive checked and its bare minimum as is really.

Just a thought but i bought a corsair k90 a few weeks ago and although i have installed the latest drivers on it,in the system tray after boot up there is a "device driver software was not correctly installed" message .Some people seem to think that or the latest 12.11 beta 3 drivers for my 7970 could be to blame. To be honest i will take whatever y`alls opinions are over what has been said on other forums though.

OP

Thanks for your more detailed reply.

As wazza says ... flashing from firmware 1.4 to 1.5 should work via the OCZ toolbox just fine (did the same with one of my Vertex 4's). Even if this is not your problem, moving to the latest firmware is a good idea (IE. some of the changes are +ve... like sequential read/write speed increases and idle time garbage collection optimisations). Especially on what in real world terms, is still a pretty new drive (IE. not been out that long in the scheme of things).

Only question that you don't appear to have answered, is have you checked the Windows Event Viewer either side of one of your slow shutdowns.

PS. If toolbox wont work for some reason. OCZ can supply a bootable ISO (standalone Linux environment) and I think one of the options is to update the firmware.

mikeo-sorry,yes i have checked the event viewer and theres no signs of any problems there.i might take the risk and update fw then as its supposed to improve the 50% full performance problem aswell isnt it?

Hi... It's not really a problem as such. It's just how the SSD (or rather the firmware in it) is designed to work. They've just fiddled with the coding to slightly mitigate how the performance/standard mode works. It's really quite a sneaky way of extracting slightly better sequential performance from the drive when it's less than 50% full. Anandtech has a reasonable write up on this. Though even they admit that they don't know the full story. OCZ does have a tenancy to play it's cards quite close to it's chest at times ;) Fair enough, it is their IP after all. See:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6074/ocz-vertex-4-review-128gb

I just wish that the figures quoted in their advertising blurb stated under what conditions the headline grabbing sequential read/write is obtained.

But to be fair. I'm not personally that interested in the sequential read/write (within limits obviously). The small file random read/write (and high IOPS) is much more important and that is not effected by this issue.

Ah! As long as im not noticing too much difference it dont really matter, although ive seen a lot of bashing on ocz from the sammy fanboys over this.Honestly though, ssd fanboys? lol

Ive opened the OCZ toolbox and where it says please select a drive from the list below,i click on drive 1-ocz vertex 4 and it says firmware 1.5 beside it in the specs.Am i right in assuming this is whats on it already? It has serial number above it so it looks like it is?

Yep... looks like you're already got the latest firmware :)

Thanks wazza Im on it now! I actually might of solved it as I finished borderlands 2 last night and uninstalled straightaway,I then shut straight down and it was instant again.
Installed hitman and played for a few hours and still no problems so I may be wrong but Im thinking some kind of bloatware or the like in borderlands?
As I said though,Im probs wrong there but its just a thought. Thanks for all thew positive feedback as usual.

could have been that game not closing properly and running in the background? that would cause pc to shutdown longer

That`s what i thought but task manager showed no signs of it? I also spoke too soon as Hitman has started doing it as well.I am aware this is a first world problem but just the fact I cant seem to work it out is bugging me more

Yes. Since installing catalyst 12.10, and then the 12.11 betas, my shutdown takes longer sometimes, where it hangs on 'shutting down' for longer than it used to. Other times it shuts down straight away. It didn't do it before 12.10. It's not really a problem, but it does bug you alright :p
