My Surface for Windows RT Review

You can install any metro app you like from the store, there is just no way to install any desktop applications in Windows RT even if they are compiled for ARM.

I am sure I read there is an official way to side load so that business can install proprietary software for employees.

I've discovered a limitation that I wasn't aware of that makes Surface considerably less useful for me that I thought it would be.
Offline SkyDrive access.....

It would appear that there's no way to have an offline cache of your SkyDrive files like you can on x86 Windows. I was hoping I could have a cache set up on my SD card so I can edit/read documents etc while on the move and then have them sync up later but no. No way to do this at present.

Has any one noticed it is literally impossible to use CSS/HTML hover menus on the Surface RT without the touch cover.

You have to hold your finger on them for it to show but then as soon as you remove you finger to click a link the menu disappears. I'm hoping MS fix this as it was fine on my ipad.

Umm dont you do what everyone does?..download the file in question?

This isn't how I use Skydrive

I have it syncing up all my machines with a certain folder. Having to manually copy files over defeats the point of having it.

They need to add the 'Desktop' version of Skydrive to the Surface too, I have no interest in keep any other files stored on the device itself, so space isn't an issue for me.

How to change the scroll direction of the touchpad to be the same as a normal laptop:
I sussed this out today after messing with the registry.

This works for my UK Touch Cover but the device ID may be different for other regions and the Type Cover.
If it doesn't work, I've detailed at the end how to find out your device ID.

Search from the start menu for regedit.exe and run it
Firstly, backup your registry with File -> Export
Next, navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\HID\ VEN_MSHW&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_MSAY0001&REV_100295A&Col0 2\4&365f1178&0&0001\Device Parameters"
On the right pane will be a key called "FlipFlopScroll", right-click it and select edit.
Change the value to 1
If you want to flip the horisontal scroll too, change the value FlipFlopHScroll to 1 as well.
Close everything and re-boot

Your touchpad will now scroll in the normal direction

If this doesn't work or if you want to confirm that the key you are editing above is correct for you:

Hit Search from the start menu and select the settings search type
Type "Device Manager" and hit enter
Look for Mice and Other Pointing Devices
Expand the tree and right mouse on "HID-Compliant Mouse"
Select "Properties" and then hit the "Details" tab.
In the drop-down box, select "Hardware IDs"
The first line will look like the last part of the key above. If it's different, just look for your key in the same place and change the FlipFlopScroll values accordingly.

Happy scrolling!

But he was complaining about not having an Offline Cache for a cloud based service, seems rather stupid to let that annoy you, when, either way, your going to have a folder syncd containing the same files anyways.

Well they have made an Official Sky News App, so they have already beaten the likes of BBC to make their own proper News app, so they could have something in the works.

But you can only access the files if you are online. If you have no network connection, you can't access the files. Its pretty simple to understand. There is no way to sync SkyDrive for offline use.
On a normal laptop, this is how it works. On the Surface you have to be online.
I suppose I could copy all my SkyDrive files somewhere on the Surface but then I would have to remember what files I've changed and then remember to sync them back up. This is a pain and doesn't make me stupid if I want cloud syncing to work the same way it does on a laptop.
