eat donuts for breakfast? pay for your own health care

Around 2.9m people in the UK are diagnosed diabetes, it's estimated nearly 1m are undiagnosed with it. It's estimated that 90% of adults with diabetes is Type 2... and guess what the biggest risk factor with Type 2 diabetes is obesity, and the cause of obesity is a lifestyle thing. The amount of money that's spent on diabetes by the NHS is insane it's pretty much going to cripple the NHS over the next couple of decades if things carry on going as they are.

He hasn't really drawn a line as to who or what would be the factor that means people would be charged so obviously not everyone but I think it would be a good idea especially for those people who are shown to not be actively trying to manage the problem.

How about we just stop the NHS entirely, and everyone can pay for their own private healthcare with premiums to match their lifestyles.

That way, everyone stumps up for their own vices and everyone can be happy in the knowledge that they aren't paying anything towards Fatty McFat-Fat, Smoker McSmokerson and Broken-Leg McFootballer.

No? Then shush. Everyone, or no-one.

I agree in principle, but you also hurt those who cant afford healthcare who through no fault of their own get ill.

That's what the NHS was for in the first place. Provides a baseline.

In 2006, the revenue from tobacco was 9.8bn per in the UK. The cost to the NHS was 5.2bn.

No I am not a smoker, but facts are facts.

I understand, not everyone gets cancer who smokes, what I was saying though is that peoples cancer treatment is not covered by their cigarette smoking, you might be covered by 3 or 4 peoples lifetime spending on fags, its not a reasonable exuse that its valud for them to get free treatment.

You'd have to assess each person case by case, which will probably end up costing more. Unless you're going to take a blanket view on everything; not all type 2 is caused by being obese, not all lung cancer is caused by smoking etc.

Yes, but we've been into that. It has been shown that if those extra one hundred thousand people had lived to a ripe old age that they would have cost us even more in pensions and social security, than they did in medical treatment. So financially speaking it is unquestionably better that they continue to die at the present rate.

Maybe we should stop giving treatment to people that come over from other countries just for treatment

What do you say to those who can only afford donuts or fried chicken and chips for 1 pound?!

Krispy Kreme glazed donut : 222kcal
Plain bagel, no butter/marg : 227kcal

Now, add some spread and a filling and the bagel is significantly more calorific than the donut.

So, given too many people are concerned about kcal, why is it worse to have a donut for breakfast?
