Win8 or Win7 decisions

Really? I ran Windows 7 beta on the same machine and it was smooth as butter, Vista was clearly turd.

I upgraded my Vista PC to Win7,it was slightly faster(not surprising since they had two years to refine it over Vista) but I would not say Vista was a turd, remember 7 is based on Vista.

Getting back on topic as some members keep saying,I would say Win8 is really easy to use as a desktop user,99% of the the remarks are unfounded IMHO.
Speaking of speed I think Win8 has the crown with regards to ANY Windows OS I've ever owned and used.

Hear a lot of people complaning there is no start menu anymore ....when its staring them in the face

Then hear complaining there's no desktop again its right their

I think most of win8 hate is not wanting to learn how to acctually use it becuase its just too differnt so they stay in their comfort zone and complain becuase they can't use it

I've been using 8 for almost a month and for me it feels very disjointed, it feels like it was half designed for a mobile device and half for a traditional computer. On my system the boot time is very impressive but I haven't noticed any real improvements in gaming or general use. I think I'll go back to Windows 7, it's just a far nicer feeling knowing where everything is and at least I won't need to mod the crap out of the OS to have it looking how I want, and I won't need to keep jumping between two completely different GUI.

moding the crap out off it is good much more customasation than win7

The task bar is horrible, plus I either have to have shortcuts on the desktop, or the task bar because they took away my Start menu and replaced with a horrific tile interface. The only ways around that are to put your icons in the start screen which requires a custom icon because 99% of my installed programs are games and as default come with horrible looking non-uniform tiles, the other option is to download the replacement start menu which for me defeats the point of Windows 8 in the first place. I HATE the way it looks.

if games tiles come with horrible tiles that's the games fault not windows 8

If a desktop short cut on win7 has a horrible icon

That's a developers problem not a win7 problem

Same applies to win 8 tiles

Yes but what I'm saying is Steam for example, Windows 7 I can stick the shortcut in the Start menu and get to it within 1 click or 1 key press, it's still hidden at all other times. Windows 8 gives me the choice of having it on the Desktop or pinning it to the task bar or Start screen. I don't want icons on the task bar nor do I want my desktop being cluttered to **** with icons. Plus I find the Start screen an utter chore to navigate with the mouse.

These are just my personal preferences and I'm sure Windows 8 is technically superior to 7 in many ways but I had no reason to ditch 7 at all. I simply wanted to give 8 a chance and after around a month of usage I think I've given it a chance.

if using mouse it's 2 clicks not 1. if using mouse + keyboard it's 1 key press and 1 click.

both ways is the same in win8.

also why care how a icon looks. your not going to sit there looking at the icons for hours.

some people makeup really stupid reasons.

You could also argue Vista to Win7 was little change on desktop or nothing really new etc...sure you got a performance boost but Win8 offers that as well.

I'll say Win7 to Win8 offers a lot more then Vista to Win7 did and any honest user would agree with me.

vista was flakey garbage. win7 is pretty much rock solid.

going from an unreliable OS to a reliable one is a pretty big step. i just dont see what win8 actually offers me. i certainly wont be upgrading people at work from win7 as there is little business purpose.

1 thing I agree for business purpose win8 won't offer much. but a lot of company's are still on xp and rely upgrade os's anyway. win8 is more for home users.

I personally wouldnt install Windows 8 until another 6months time, by then all known major issues would have been resolved.

The main thing I don't like about the start screen is that it isn't completely takes you out of what you are doing. For example I'm watching a youtube video and I decide I want to take some notes or check an email, when I go to open the relevant program the start screen completely takes over the screen and hence the video runs in the background with sound only. Another example is following troubleshooting instructions. With the old start menu I could put the instructions on one side of the screen and go through the whole process of finding the program I want while the instructions are always visible. I find it surprisingly disorientating. But outside of that it's just another UI to me.

I don't see the point of waiting for six months as Windows 8 is rock solid from where I'm sitting.

If this happens a lot to you you should consider having the programs pinned to the taskbar.

Not sure what you mean here, if your trying to read an app while using the desktop you don't have to switch you can drag the app to the side then go back to the desktop. If you just mean opening a program from the start menu why would you need to see the instructions to do that? read its name then go run it.

This^ For example when you have a web page and a document open and you need to use the calculator. On 7 I can open calculator from the shortcut in the start menu without interrupting what I'm doing.

Also I don't like the gesture based stuff. I have a mouse. It is much easier to point and click than to swipe or fiddle around in the corners of the screen.

I understand why some people like Win 8 as everyone's usage pattern is different, and 8 makes improvements in speed and security. What I don't understand is why they can't accept that the way it does things isn't going to please everyone. It's not like it's received universally positive reviews and the dislikers are swimming against the tide.

lol

so u have 4 eyes? looking at a web page and a document and the start menu and mouse pointer.

my god some of these reasons are stupid/crazy

it only takes 2 seconds to open something from the start screen
