Apologies first, as I know this is asked regularly, but I have read all the other threads on here about which 7950 card to buy (some very recent that have stalled a bit). As prices seem to be up and down regularly I would really appreciate your opinions as I will be ordering a 7950 from OC within the next few hours.

I'm looking to play FPS games on my 1080p tv / monitor, OR sometimes on a 1440p monitor if the fps rate is up to it. I have never OCd before but am willing to give it a go a bit further down the line. After taking advice from this forum I have already 'stepped down' from of the plan getting a 7970, so £50 or so either way on these 7950s is not really an issue...

My current favourite and most likely purchase is the

HIS IceQ Boost - £227

but I see others such as

ASUS Direct CU2 TOP - £270
Windforce - £260
Twin Frozr 3 OC - £264
Sapphire Vapor-X OC - £260

I would be very grateful if anyone could offer any further advice before I pull the trigger, even if you just simply name the card you would go for and thats that or any other info would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, and sorry again for boring / repetition of threads.

Rick.

Is it not worth buying the none 'boost' version and simply clocking it yourself?

The fan will be louder/poorer cooling, plus you are only saving £6 with the current offer.

I've just read the review of the IceQ and it said that is can be difficult to fit 2 side by side so that may be a consideration.

Edit: IceQ is a bit of a silly shape IMO.

Ice-Q.

+ Cheapest.

+ Vents out the case with temps not rising much at all when overclocked.

+ Has the boost bios.

+ Unlocked core and memory voltage(through His Turbo software).

- If you have an extremely quiet case, you may hear a very slight grate/scrape@idle-if quietness plays a part in your purchase choice, but it's quieter under load than the WF/TF.

7950 noise comparison if it helps:

@Op, play the DCU II first, then play another at the same time, you'll find out what's the quietest easy enough.

Wrong. It's easy to fit two side by side. They are slightly larger than TFIII but not much.

I've never understood why people say oh another one of these XXX threads, if you know there are others with the answer why are you asking? ;)

A few reasons really,

1. the prices fluctuate - especially with the weekly offers here at OC, so that could make a difference to what people may recommend from week to week, even though in this case is probably the least important factor for me

2. The closest other thread of this kind has meandered away from the OP question and into other specifics about RAM cooling, and almost stopped anyway

3. I was able to ask the same question but with more specific details about how it relates to my particular situation. eg. what games I want to play, what resolution(s) I want to run and my previous OCing experience (none)

I have read as much as I possibly can here on the forums and based on the confirmations above it seems I have made a good choice. As a complete novice it is reassuring to know that I went with the consensus of opinion from some very knowledgeable people before coughing up the best part of £250.

Thank you all for your replies and for your time, much appreciated.

Looking at the photographs and the reviews of the HIS IceQ Boost, it looks like that card will occupy 2 1/2 slots.

If I'm so definitively WRONG why did they mention it in the review?
Are you implying that it was a lie?

The width of the cooler on the HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST effectively makes it a 3 slot card.
